MILWAUKEE, Wis. (Oct. 19, 2007) -
Six different players scored goals, including five in the second half, to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team to a 6-0 win over Cleveland State Friday evening at Engelmann Field.
The Panthers (10-3-3, 6-0-1 Horizon) extended their unbeaten streak to 10 games (7-0-3), while remaining unbeaten (7-0) all-time against the Vikings (4-11, 1-4 Horizon).
"I thought we played well. This was an important stretch for us, three conference games in a row," Milwaukee head coach Michael Moynihan said. "I was kind of concerned about Cleveland State. They've improved a lot and are coming off their first conference win. They beat Youngstown by more than we did. We came out with a lot of energy from start to finish. We kept playing and played some attractive soccer and scored some nice goals. It was a good night for us."
Senior Pam Shipway got the scoring started with her second-straight game-winning goal 30:42 into the first half. She played a give and go with freshman Nicole Sperl, before lofting a cross into the net from 15 yards out.
Milwaukee took a 1-0 lead into halftime and wasted no time in building on that lead in the second half. Sophomore Kate Megna took a misplayed Viking ball and scored just 37 seconds after the intermission.
Sophomore Erin Kreuser and senior Amanda Winn then added goals less than two minutes apart to make it 4-0 in the 58th minute. Kreuser's goal came off a rebound of sophomore Andrea Wisniewski's shot off the cross bar at 55:52. Senior Amanda Winn bent in a corner kick 1:58 later.
Sperl added a goal of her own on a penalty kick in the 80th minute and senior Claire Pignet scored her first collegiate goal on a 35-yard free kick in the 85th minute. She blasted a shot that hit the bottom of the cross bar and came down past the goal line.
"The wind I'm sure had a factor," Moynihan said of the second half. "They tried to play on the ground against the win. As soon as they started trying to do that we started pressing them. They had a hard time and it created a lot of opportunities in their end for us. We got everybody on the field today and everybody showed a lot of energy, I think they had a hard time keeping up with that."
The Panthers dominated the stat sheet, racking up 24 shots in the second half for a final 42-4 shot advantage. They also forced 11 corner kicks, while not allowing any. UWM generated a number of chances, including a rocket off the far post in the 22nd minute.
Junior Erin Kane and freshman Leslie Deebach combined on the shutout, with Deebach making the team's only save over the last 23:06 of the match. It was Deebach's collegiate debut.
Kelly Zinkiewich made three saves in 62-plus minutes in goal, with Shannon Saunders making four more saves over the remainder of the match. The Vikings also got a team save when Zinkiewich made a save on Winn's shot and a defender cleared a rebound shot by Kreuser off the line in the 58th minute.
Milwaukee returns to action Sunday, hosting Wright State in its Horizon League finale. The Panthers can clinch their eighth-straight Horizon League championship with a win over the Raiders. Kick off is scheduled for noon.
