MILWAUKEE -
Colin Baker scored the game-winner and Ryan Germann recorded another shutout in goal to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over the University of Detroit-Mercy Friday night. The win also marked the 400th in program history.
In a defensive battle, the Panthers (3-8-2, 3-0-1 Horizon) made the lone goal stand up against the Titans (4-6-4, 0-2-2 Horizon), who had come into the game having not given up a goal in two-straight matches and posting shutouts in four of its last six outings.
"Four league games and three shutouts - it's exceptional, UWM head coach Jon Coleman said. "I think they are really starting to play together well as a unit. Everyone is putting in a good defensive effort, staying smart and concentrating."
Baker found the back of the net in the 61st minute, heading home the game-winner from about eight yards out off a perfect lead pass from senior Zeke Dombrowski to extend UWM's unbeaten streak to five games (3-0-2).
Germann actually started the action, playing a goal kick to Dombrowski at midfield. The ball got knocked out and Dombrowski quickly threw it down the sideline to senior Tenzin Rampa. After making a couple of moves around a defender, Rampa centered it back to Dombrowski, who found Baker at the top of the box.
The defense did the rest, posting its third shutout in the past five games. Germann was called on to make just two saves, stopping a harmless chance in the first half and coming up big with just over a minute left in the game, punching a 35-yard blast by Simon Zahra up and over the cross bar. He extended his scoreless streak to 282:08 in the process.
The victory moved Milwaukee's all-time program record to 400-230-55.
"I think it's a huge mark for any program to get to 400 wins," Coleman said. "A lot of people have been part of those wins over the years and I am glad we had the chance to do it at home and win another conference game."
Milwaukee outshot the Titans, 13-to-six, in the match, and had a chance to break into the scoring column early in the contest when freshman Robert Refai had two chances in an eight-minute span.
In the 21st minute, he took a through ball from Dombrowski at the top of the box and had a one-on-one with Titan goalkeeper Bryan Kloss. But Kloss came off his line, making a sensational stop of Refai's attempt. Then, in the 29th minute, Rampa chipped a perfect pass over the back line to Refai, who volleyed a shot just over the cross bar.
Kloss finished with six saves compared to the two Germann recorded. Milwaukee forced five corner kicks to three for Detroit and was whistled for 21 of the game's 47 fouls. The match also saw 12 yellow and one red cards get issued, with UWM receiving five of the yellows.
The Panthers will look to extend their unbeaten streak with another home game Sunday, welcoming Cleveland State to Engelmann Field, starting Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
