YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio -
Quin Humphrey had 22 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Youngstown State to an 81-63 win over the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Saturday night at the Beeghly Center.
Ricky Franklin led Milwaukee with 18 points, but the Panthers (5-14, 2-4 Horizon) shot just 36 percent from the field.
Byron Davis had 17 points, Keston Roberts 14, John Barber 12 and Jack Liles 10 to help a potent Youngstown State (8-10, 3-3) attack. The Penguins shot 50 percent from the field and rolled up 51 points in the second half.
Kevin Massiah added 11 points and Ryan Thornton had nine off the bench for the Panthers.
"Offensively, when they guarded us man-to-man, we felt like we could score buckets. But when they guarded us in the zone, it was difficult for us to score points the way we are accustomed to scoring them," UWM head coach Rob Jeter said. "With their zone, they just made it difficult on us, because we did not have any inside play."
The Panthers started well, jumping to leads of 6-2 and 8-4 before the Penguins tied the game at 13 with 10:09 remaining. YSU took the lead for the first time at 20-18 on a Davis dunk and then expanded the edge to 25-18 following two free throws from Davis.
Thornton helped keep UWM in the game with a three that cut the lead to 25-21 with just over a minute to play. And, Avery Smith added a runner in the lane that brought the Panthers to within 27-23 with eight seconds left. But, Roberts buried a three from the left corner as time expired in the first half to give YSU a 30-23 lead at the break.
The Penguins then quickly pushed their lead in the second half up to 15 points, with a three-point play by Humphrey making it 46-31 with 14:07 remaining. The Panthers responded, scoring 12 of the next 16 points to pull within seven at 50-43 with 10:33 remaining.
But, YSU followed with the decisive run. A jumper by Humphrey made it 61-45 and a three-pointer by Roberts pushed the lead to 67-49 with 4:42 remaining, effectively ending the game.
The Panthers return to their homecourt this week, hosting first-place UIC Wednesday night at the U.S. Cellular Arena. The game tips off at 7 p.m. CST.
