MADISON, Wis. (Sept. 15, 2006) - Sophomore Erin Kane posted her fourth shutout of the year and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team allowed just four shots as it fought to a 0-0 tie with Kentucky Friday afternoon in Madison, Wis.

The tie was the first of the season for both the Panthers (5-2-1) and Wildcats (5-2-1), who were playing in the opening match of the Wisconsin Soccer Classic.

"I think we left the game wanting more. We felt like we could have walked out of here with a win," UWM head coach Michael Moynihan said. "Defensively, we played well. To limit a quality opponent like Kentucky to one shot on goal like that is pretty good."

Milwaukee had the upperhand in extra time, consistently pushing for the golden goal, but could not find the back of the net. Sophomore Jodi Klagos nearly ended the match in the 96th minute, heading a Kate Megna free kick just wide of the target.

For the match, UWM outshot Kentucky, 9-4. The Wildcats were whistled for 23 fouls compared to 12 by Milwaukee and both teams forced five corner kicks.

"This game has two teams that play 4-5-1 (formations)," Moynihan said. "That creates a lot of pressure in the midfield and creates a stalemate in a lot of places."

Kane picked up her fourth shutout of the season and the 17th of her career. On the other end, Anne Ogundele made two saves and benefited from a team save early one in posting her fourth-straight shutout.

The second half was a back-and-forth affair, with both teams creating extended offensive attacks. UWM took three shots in the second half, including in the 55th minute when junior Amanda Winn rocketed a free kick on goal from 35 yards out.

Kentucky also created some dangerous chances, taking all four of its shots in the half and forcing three corners. One corner came in the 47th minute, which Giuleana Lopez headed just wide from eight yards away.

UWM controlled the offensive momentum in a physical first half, generating a number of scoring chances, while not allowing UK to generate any offense. The Panthers outshot Kentucky, 5-0, for the frame and held the edge in corners, 3-2.

Winn led the charge in the opening period. In the fourth minute, she sent a corner kick far post and senior Taylor Powell headed it near post, but had her shot cleared out of the way by a Wildcat defender.

"Amanda had another great performance for us," Moynihan said. "She had a ball just over the bar and a few more dangerous free kicks for us. She also dictated a lot of play in the midfield, winning a lot of balls. (Freshman) Carly Chertos also had a nice game for us off the bench. She gave us energy and held the ball well."

She also drilled free kicks just wide of the target in the 21st minute from 35 yards out and the 29th minute from just outside the 18-yard box, with the former sailing inches outside the upper left 90.

The Panthers continue at the Wisconsin Soccer Classic Sunday, taking on nationally-ranked Missouri. Game time is set for 10:30 a.m. at the Dan McClimon Soccer Complex in Madison.
