MILWAUKEE, Wis. (Sept. 12, 2006) - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team scored two goals in the second half to run past Marquette, 2-0, on a rainy, Tuesday night at Valley Field.

Sophomores Sarah Teegarden and Beth Steuer each scored goals to push the Panthers to 5-2 on the season, while Marquette fell to 2-2-2. UWM last defeated the Golden Eagles in 2003, while it's last road win in the series came in 1998.

"This is a local rivalry, so the players don't really need any added motivation," UWM head coach Michael Moynihan said. "We came out well-organized. The competition we've faced earlier this year has sharpened us up."

Milwaukee overcame wet conditions to break a scoreless tie in the 50th minute. Junior Amanda Winn sent a long free kick into the box. After a UWM player had her shot blocked, Teegarden poked the loose ball into the goal for a 1-0 lead.

Steuer made it 2-0 with an insurance goal in the 68th minute. Winn was once again involved, sending a corner kick far post. Steuer was there to finish for her second score of the season.

The Panthers finished with the 9-8 shot advantage, but conced the edge in corner kicks, 6-2. UWM also committed just four fouls, including one in the second half, compared to 15 by the Golden Eagles. Sophomore Erin Kane stopped three shots for her third shutout of the season. Meanwhile, Laura Boyer made two saves in goal for MU.

The opening minutes of the match were back and forth, as both teams attempted to gain traction on the slippery terrain. The Panthers overcame three-straight Golden Eagle corners to yield only a header by Alison Loughrin over the bar. Winn then sent a pair of dangerous long shots skipping at Boyer.

"Amanda Winn pretty much controlled the midfield," Moynihan said. "She was composed with the ball and won a lot of balls. Our whole back line played great. Ginny Graczyk was her usual self, using her great recovery skills."

Coming out of halftime, Milwaukee controlled the momentum of the match resulting in its first goal of the match. After its first goal, the Golden Eagles came right back as Michelle Pitzl tried to convert a corner kick just moments later. Pitzl's shot was high and Kane was able to get the save.

For the remainder of the game, UWM was able to hold on to its lead. It routinely clogged passing lanes and controlled the midfield as Marquette attempted to get back into the game. The Golden Eagles' last chance came in the 71st minute when senior Stacey Faude cleared a rebound shot off the line to preserve the shutout.

"We executed our game plan well," Moynihan said. "Our players are maturing in that sense and that helps us to execute what we go through in practice. In conditions like this it's tough to play balls into the corners, and we were able to clog the middle."

Milwaukee returns to action this weekend (Sept. 15-17) at the Wisconsin Soccer Classic in Madison. UWM takes on Kentucky Friday, before a contest with No. 18 Missouri Sunday.
