BLOOMINGTON, Ind. (Sept. 10, 2006) -
Carrie DeFreece scored two goals to lead Indiana past the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team, 2-0, Sunday afternoon on the final day of the Hoosier Classic in Bloomington, Ind.
The Panthers (4-2) finished second in the tourney with a 1-1 record, while the Hoosiers (3-2-1) won their own tournament with a 2-0 mark.
DeFreece scored the eventual game-winner in the 13th minute, finishing on a breakaway against UWM keeper Erin Kane. Jenna Babcock played a long ball over the Panther defense and DeFreece tallied the score.
"I was disappointed with the goals we gave up and until Indiana scored, I thought we had the better build ups and chances," UWM head coach Michael Moynihan said. "We generated the better chances to score and had more corner kicks, but just weren't efficient with those opportunities.
"We have to do more with the chances we created. We are capable of more than we were able to do today."
She then added another goal in the 24th minute on a rebound off the cross bar. Laura Lamping lofted a long shot off the bar and DeFreece tapped in the open rebound from six yards out.
Despite the outcome, Milwaukee still had several dangerous scoring opportunities. Sophomore Sarah Teegarden headed a header just wide in the fifth minute and two minutes later freshman Louise Vraney beat a defender 1v1, but sent her shot right into the keeper's chest.
Just before halftime, freshman Erin Kreuser nearly pulled UWM within one. Sophomore Beth Steuer won a ball in the midfield and sent a through ball to Kreuser, who then unleashed a shot from 25 yards out. IU keeper Stacey Van Boxmeer was able to get a hand on the ball and tip it over the crossbar.
"Ginny (Graczyk) and Taylor (Powell) played well for us today," Moynihan said. "Ginny used her great recovery ability, especially late when we were trying to press, she was isolated. Taylor was great winning balls for us in the back and also had a header that went just high."
The Hoosiers outshot UWM, 14-10, on the match, but Milwaukee gained the edge in corner kicks, 5-4.
Kane made four saves in goal for the Panthers, while her counterpart, Van Boxmeer, finished with six saves for the shutout.
Graczyk and Powell were named to the Hoosier Classic All-Tournament team. They were joined by junior Joanna Severson, who scored the game-winner on Friday vs. Rhode Island.
Milwaukee returns to action with a busy weekend ahead. UWM travels across town to take on Marquette Tuesday at 7 p.m., before playing in the Wisconsin Invitational, Sept. 15-17, in Madison, Wis.
