Box Score

NORMAL, Ill. (Aug. 18, 2006) - Senior Stacey Faude scored the game-tying goal in the 89th minute to propel the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team to a 2-2 tie against Illinois State, Friday afternoon in Normal, Ill.

The Panthers scored first, but fell down, 2-1, before getting the game-tying score. UWM finishes its preseason at 1-0-1 after a 2-0 win over Northern Illinois Tuesday.

"We didn't look sharp out there, but I we were still dominant," UWM head coach Michael Moynihan said. "Sarah Teegarden had to come out when after being hit in the mouth early and we missed her presence in the midfield. It wasn't pretty, but I liked how we fought back and dominated the tail end of regulation to tie the game."

Heading towards the final two minutes of regulation, freshman Carly Chertos got the equalizing play started when she hit the cross bar for the second time in the period. Her header caromed off the bar and down on the goal line. Faude ran through the ball, beating the ISU keeper for the score.

Sophomore Jodi Klagos had started the day's scoring with a marker in the 34th minute. Senior Elicia Scaife beat a Redbird defender and served the ball into the weak side. Klagos then pounced on the ball, sending her shot far post for the 1-0 lead Milwaukee took into halftime.

"I thought we looked tired after a long preseason," Moynihan said. "But, I liked how we fought back, worked our way out of it and finished with the tie.

Illinois State knotted the game at 1-1 when Katelyn Prorak sent a ball over the UWM defense and Brenna Bohl finished off the play just two minutes after the break. The Redbirds took then took the lead when Carrie Schurr beat freshman keeper Ilana Bar-Av to her left in the 78th minute.

Milwaukee outshot the home team, 15-14, including an 8-4 edge in the second half as it clawed its way back into the game. Illinois State took three corners, compared to two by UWM, and both teams combined on just 17 fouls.

Freshman Leslie Deebach got the start in goal, making three save in a clean first half. Bar-Av took over after the break, stopping three shots of her own. Andrea Shaw and Erica Goethel each played 55 minutes, combining on nine saves and allowing a goal apiece.

With the preseason complete, the Panthers look to the regular season, which gets underway Friday, Aug. 25, on the first day of the seventh annual Milwaukee Cup. UWM takes on Sacred Heart at 6 p.m. at Marquette's Valley Field.
