HUNTSVILLE, Texas - James Barrett poured in a career high 27 points and Sam Houston State made 11 three-point baskets in claiming an 89-73 win over the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Friday night at Johnson Coliseum.

The Bearkats (7-5), the favorites to win the Western Division of the Southland Conference, have now won 28-straight non-conference home games, the third longest winning streak in the nation.

Avery Smith scored 18 points and Allan Hanson added 10 for UWM (2-11), which lost for the seventh-straight time.

SHS built an 18-point first-half lead and never let UWM get closer than 13 in the second half. Aaron Wade added 15 points for the Bearkats, who shot 50 percent overall.

"They're a good team," UWM head coach Rob Jeter said. "The plan was to do what we do. Offensively, I thought we were better. Our shooting percentage was over 40 percent, and that's an improvement. But, obviously we didn't get it done defensively."

The Bearkats rode 51.6 percent shooting from the field and eight 3-point baskets to their big first-half lead. Sam Houston jumped out to a 12-6 lead on back-to-back threes by Barrett and extended the edge to 21-9 on a fadeaway hoop from Ryan Bright. A three by Shamir McDaniel made it 24-11 before the Panthers rallied, pulling within 27-21 after hoops from Smith and Kevin Massiah.

But, the Bearkats countered with a 22-10 run, highlighted by five-straight points from Jejuan Plair and then seven-straight from Barrett. A three by Ricky Franklin just before the final horn brought the Panthers back to within 49-34 at the break.

UWM cut the lead to 13 at 49-36 on a Massiah tip in of his own miss one minute into the second half. But, Sam Houston scored the next seven points to build a 20-point lead and eventually led by as many as 22 points in the second 20 minutes.

The Panthers return to action next week with a pair of home games. Wyoming visits the U.S. Cellular Arena Wednesday night before #16 Butler comes to Milwaukee on Saturday night. Both games tip off at 7 p.m.
