CLEVELAND, Ohio (Oct. 8, 2006) - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team built a 2-0 halftime lead and tallied three second-half scores to roll past Cleveland State, 5-0, Sunday afternoon in Cleveland.

Four different Panthers scored goals as they remained perfect in league play at 4-0 and move to 11-2-1 on the season. The Vikings fell to 2-13 on the year and 0-4 in the league.

"Cleveland came out and tried to attack more, so that made more room for us and we were able to take advantage of that," UWM head coach Michael Moynihan said. "We were able to get a 2-0 lead by halftime and get a lot of players an opportunity to play."

Sophomore Beth Steuer led the team with two goals and freshman Louise Vraney picked up her first two assists on the year for Milwaukee. Freshman Erin Kreuser scored the game-winner, while freshman Carly Chertos and junior Joanna Severson each added scores.

"If you look at our scoring throughout the year, it has been well split up," Moynihan said. "We don't rely on one player to score for us and that makes it harder for teams to defend against us. They can't just focus on stopping one player. Today, everybody played well. Beth led the way with her two goals."

Kreuser's game-winner came in the 22nd minute off an assist from Vraney. Freshman Kate Megna started the play sending a ball to Vraney, who crossed it to Kreuser at the top of the box. Kreuser then beat the keeper 1v1 for the score.

Steuer added her first goal of the match in the 39th minute. She received a ball out wide, beat a defender and nailed her shot far post for the score. All three second-half markers came in a 10-minute span. Steuer got the ball rolling, notching a rebound goal in the 60th minute. Junior Amanda Winn and Vraney were credited with assists.

Chertos' first collegiate goal came in the 67th minute when she finished a long Bailey Briggs throw-in from five yards out. Severson added her second penalty kick score of the week in the 70th minute. Senior Elicia Scaife was taken down in the box, drawing the call.

In the first half, the Panthers outshot their hosts just 5-3, despite the 2-0 score advantage. They also held the 4-1 advantage in corner kicks, while also making the period's only two saves.

"In the first half, we were playing possession and that didn't yield many shots," Moynihan said. "In the second half, we tried to penetrate early and play the ball into our forwards a lot more. That opened things up for us considerably."

It was a different story in the second half, as UWM outshot Cleveland State 15-2 to finish with the 20-5 advantage.

Sophomore Erin Kane and freshman Ilana Bar-Av combined on the shutout, with Kane making Milwaukee's two saves in the first half. Bar-Av entered the game in the 77th minute and made one save.

Erin Withrow and Ashley Kidwell each played a half for the Vikings in goal with Kidwell making all six CSU saves after the break.

UWM returns to action Friday (Oct. 13) in Chicago against Loyola. Kick off is scheduled for 3 p.m. at Loyola Soccer Field.
