MILWAUKEE, Wis. (Oct. 28, 2006) -
Freshman Erin Kreuser scored two goals, including the game-winner, to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team past Cleveland State, 4-1, Saturday afternoon in the quarterfinals of the 2006 Horizon League Tournament.
The top-seeded Panthers (16-2-1) advance to the semifinals to host No. 4 Detroit, which edged No. 5 UW-Green Bay, 1-0. UWM will play host to the remainder of the league tournament.
Kreuser's first goal of the match broke a 1-1 tie 60th minute. Freshman Kate Megna sent a corner kick to the far post that sophomore Sarah Teegarden sent on goal. CSU keeper Ashley Kidwell made a diving save, but was unable to recover when Kreuser deposited the ball into the net from three yards out.
The scoring didn't stopped, as senior Taylor Powell added Milwaukee's first insurance goal in the 75th minute, converting an Amanda Winn corner kick far post. Winn assisted on the game's final goal in the 87th minute. She found Kreuser at the edge of the box. Kreuser then beat a defender a scored from 12 yards, far post.
After heading into halftime tied at 1-1, the Panthers dominated the second half, ousthooting Cleveland State 20-0 in the half and holding the 6-0 edge in corner kicks.
"In the first half we looked lethargic and our mentality wasn't right," Milwaukee head coach Michael Moynihan said. "In the second half, we played to feet more and got into a rhythm. We had some nice goals and some other nice chances.
"Their keeper had a good game for them. She made a couple nice saves in the first half."
For the match, Milwaukee outshot the Vikings, 31-2, and held the 9-3 advantage in corners. The Panthers also forced Kidwell into 10 saves for the game and made the defense added a team save.
Meanwhile, sophomore Erin Kane did not register a save in goal for Milwaukee.
Milwaukee jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 27th minute on a long free kick into the box by junior Ginny Graczyk. Kicking from the midfield circle, she sent her kick to the left post where Megna headed the ball past Kidwell.
Cleveland responded just over three minutes later, as Lisa Conway bent in a corner kick in the 30th minute. Her corner sailed to the upper corner to tie the game a one-all.
UWM won its 16th match of the season, breaking the school record of 15 set in 2001. It was also the Panthers 11th-straight win and 13th-straight without a loss (12-0-1). The unbeaten streak sets a record set last season.
The Horizon League Semifinals will be played Nov. 3 at Engelmann Field. Game times and matchups are yet to be announced.
