MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Freshman Erin Kane posted her second shutout of the season to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team in a 0-0 tie with cross-town rival Marquette, Wednesday afternoon at Engelmann Field.

Kane saved all four shots on goal by the Golden Eagles, which are ranked as high as No. 14 nationally by Soccer America Magazine. Her counterpart, Laura Boyer, also stopped four shots to preserve the shutout.

"I expected a lot more good chances by both teams today," head coach Michael Moynihan said. "But against a rival like Marquette, a lot more is at stake with family and pride. Both back lines performed that way."

Both teams came out aggressive in a physical first half, but neither team came away with a score. Momentum shifted back and forth, with UWM's best scoring opportunity coming in the 29th minute. Senior Katie Campion beat her defender to a diagonal ball through the box, but saw her shot saved at the near post by Boyer. Milwaukee gained the shot advantage in the frame (6-4) and forced one more corner kick (2-1).

In the second half, Marquette attempted to become the aggressors, but were limited in scoring threats by the Panther defense. The Golden Eagles best chance came in the 88th minute, when Alsion Loughrin took a pass from Lindsay Michuda on the right side of the box and launched a shot just over the cross bar.

Momentum continued to shift throughout regulation, with Marquette attempting 11 more shots after halftime (13-2). For the match, MU held the advantage in shots, 17-8, with both teams taking two corners. Milwaukee was whistled for one more foul (16-16) and was called offsides twice more (4-2).

"The statistics do not tell the whole story," Moynihan said. "Our defense did a great job to limit the number of quality chances by Marquette by not allowing them to get into a range to really threaten."

This was the second shutout of the season for Kane and the Panther defense. Both clean slates have ended in scoreless ties, after Milwaukee played No. 13 Illinois to a 0-0 draw Aug. 28 during the Milwaukee Cup.

The Panthers return to action Friday at Central Florida in Orlando. UWM and UCF kick off at 6 p.m. central time. Milwaukee stays in Florida to take on the University of Florida Sunday, before returning to town.
