MILWAUKEE, Wis. (Sept. 30, 2005)--The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team dominated play for 90 minutes and outshot its opponent, 33-3, on the way to a 3-0 win over Cleveland State Friday afternoon at Engelmann Field. UWM moves to 5-4-2 on the season and 2-0 in league play with the win, while the Vikings drop to 0-11 and 0-1 in the league.

The Panthers came out of the gate aggressive, launching 12 shots in the match's first 18 minutes, breaking through on a penalty kick for the game-winner. After a CSU hand ball in the penalty area, sophomore Ginny Graczyk calmly converted a PK attempt to the left of keeper Erin Withrow for her first goal of the season in the 18th minute.

Milwaukee maintained possession of the ball thoughout the frame, favoring a more conservative approach until halftime. The Panthers outshot Cleveland State, 16-1, in the first period, forcing five corner kicks.

"I thought we played well in the beginning of the game. We came out with a good intensity and on a roll," head coach Michael Moynihan said. "We lost our rhythm a bit, but we were very composed and less frantic. We pride ourselves on our depth, so we can't have that letdown."

After the Vikings kicked off the second half, UWM did not allow the ball to cross midfield into its defensive half for almost 11 minutes. The Panthers then pushed their lead to 2-0 in the 61st minute. Freshman Bailey Briggs began the play with a corner kick to the far post. Senior Katie Campion took the cross and kicked it out to freshman Sarah Teegarden. Teegarden then sent a shot far post, while senior Andrea Kramer re-directed the ball into the net from two yards out.

It became 3-0 in the waning minutes, when sophomore Pam Shipway blasted a shot from the top of the box in the 89th minute. Kramer took a quick and short corner kick to Graczyk. Graczyk sent a cross through the box to freshman Jodi Klagos, whose header was deflected to the edge of the box. Shipway came on and finished from 18 yards out for her first goal of the season.

"The way were playing, we could have scored more if we had been more efficient with our finishing," Moynihan said. "This week, we worked on capitalizing on what we were given more often, rather than playing only directly at them. I am happy with three goals today."

Freshman Erin Kane did not face a shot on goal in picking up her fifth shutout of the season. Kane stopped a deep diagonal ball midway through the first half, ending the visitor's best scoring opportunity. Withrow saved seven of UWM's 10 shots on goal for Cleveland State.

On the day, Milwaukee gained the 33-3 shot advantage and forced all 14 of the game's corner kicks, including nine in the final 45 minutes. The Panthers' shot total eclipsed their previous game-high of 2005, with their 18th shot coming in the 50th minute. Campion and Teegarden let the shot barrage with five apiece, while Shipway and junior Taylor Powell each collected four.

"We came out really hard at the beginning and got a goal early. After our first goal, we kept attacking and made sure we would come out with a win," senior captain Janice McGann said. "This was an important conference game and we really got up for it."

UWM returns to action Sunday, with a league road match at Butler. The Panthers and Bulldogs kick off at noon central at Varsity Field in Indianapolis, Ind.
