MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Freshman Erin Kane recorded her first collegiate shutout, leading the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team to a 0-0 draw against No. 13 Illinois Sunday afternoon at Engelmann Field.
In addition to being Kane's first shutout, it also marked the first time the Panthers shutout a ranked opponent since moving to Division I in 1990.
"Depth was huge for us today, we had a lot of players that played well," head coach Michael Moynihan said. "Erin Kane had a strong presence in goal for us and Ginny Graczyk was huge for our defense today. She had the task of shutting down a player that gave Marquette fits on Friday. A lot of players got in and kept the pressure on Illinois. Our effort and workrates were great today."
In the second half, the Panthers came out aggressively, generating repeated scoring threats. Freshman Jodi Klagos, who finished with a team-high four shots, hit the post twice in a 17-minute span. In the 50th minute her rebound off the right post was covered by the Illinois keeper before UWM could get a second shot off. After she hit the left post in the 67th minute, junior Stacey Faude had her rebound shot blocked. Faude was at it again in three minutes later, launching a Bailey Briggs rebound just over the cross bar.
"Our goal in the first half was to make it difficult for Illinois to play through the midfied," Moynihan said. "At halftime we talked about finding situations to press. We came out and picked them very well.
"Faude had a great weekend for us, building on what she was able to do on Friday."
UWM took 11 shots in the half, compared to six by the visitors. And, despite being outshot 6-3 in 20 minutes of overtime, Milwaukee made a number of threats of scoring the golden goal. The team finished with 17 shots and two corner kicks, compared to 18 shots and six corners for Illinois.
Making just her second collegiate start, Kane finished with six saves, while the UWM defense cleared a seventh shot on goal off the goal line. Her counterpart, Lindsey Carstens, finished with three saves in preserving the tie.
Milwaukee came out of the gates on the defensive, conceding a 6-3 advantage in shots in the first half, but not allowing a threat on goal. The Fighting Illini also forced the frame's only three corner kicks.
The match concluded the 2005 Howard Johnson Milwaukee Cup, as the Panthers (0-1-1) and the Fighting Illini (0-1-1) tied for third. Marquette defeated Northwestern (1-1), 2-1, to win the Milwaukee Cup title.
Marquette's Julie Thompson joined Kane and Teegarden on the All-Tournament Team, earning MVP honors, while Laura Boyer, Michelle Pitzel and Sarah Uyenish also represented the Golden Eagles on the team. Kelsey Hans, Tori Bohanon and Jeannette Lorme from Northwestern and Kelly Campbell and Christen Karniski from Illinois rounded out the team.
UWM returns to action next Sunday (Sept. 4), hosting reigning Missouri Valley Conference Champion Drake. Kickoff is set for noon.
