FT. WAYNE, Ind. -
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team managed just two shots and allowed three goals in 20 minutes of action in falling to Purdue, 3-0, Thursday evening at the IPFW Soccer Showcase in Ft. Wayne, Ind. It was the final exhibition match of the 2005 preseason for UWM.
"We had some moments in there where we looked really good," head coach Michael Moynihan said. "The combination of having new people in there and learning a new system caused some indecisive play. When we got indecisive we left ourselves exposed."
The Boilermakers scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 31st minute on a corner kick from Kim Comisar. Comisar took the corner kick from the right side and bent her kick into the goal past freshman goalkeeper Erin Kane, unassisted. Purdue added a pair of second-half goals, with the third and final goal coming on another corner kick. Shauna Stapleton found the head of Amy Burrell to account for the final 3-0 tally in the 59th minute.
Freshman Sarah Teegarden manufactured one of the team's two shots, including UWM's best scoring opportunity. Late in the first half, Teegarden received a ball from 30 yards out, spun and forced the Purdue keeper to make a finger-tip save.
"Sarah (Teegarden) and Jodi Klagos really provided us with a spark off the bench," Moynihan said. "Sarah had a really nice shot that she almost scored on. Kitty Montgomery and Ginny Graczyk were also very solid for us out there."
Purdue finished with the 12-2 edge in shots, while also allowing Milwaukee just one corner kick, compared to six of its own. Kane finished with three saves for the Panthers and three keepers combined on the shutout for the Boilermakers.
"We looked a little soft at times compared to Purdue in terms of ball-winning," Moynihan said. "At times we were indecisive and a bit inconsistent, but overall our effort was good."
Milwaukee will get its fill of Big Ten opponents, as it opens the season with a pair of matches against Big Ten foes at the Sixth Annual Milwaukee Cup, Aug. 26-28. UWM takes on Northwestern on Friday at 6 p.m. at Marquette's Valley Field. Action at the tournament moves to Engelmann Field, where the Panthers face off with No. 13 Illinois at 2:30 p.m.
