The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team outshot Northern Illinois, 17-7, but could not find the back of the net in playing to a scoreless tie Monday evening in DeKalb. It was the exhibition opener for both teams.
Freshman goalkeeper Erin Kane stopped all four shots on goal for the shutout, while the Panther defense limited the number of Huskie attacks. Seniors Janice McGann and Rebecca Englund, junior Val Cooper and sophomore Amanda Winn held host NIU to just three first-half shots. Winn remained on the field much of the second half, joined by junior Molly Duffy and sophomores Claire Pignet and Ginny Graczyk. The group held Northern Illinois to four shots and no corner kicks.
After a scoreless first half, a new UWM lineup came out of the intermission attacking, led by freshman sub Sarah Teegarden. Teegarden, an Illinois native, finished with a team-high five shots on the day, including four over the first 14 minutes of the second frame. Junior Taylor Powell also collected four on the day, playing in the first half.
In addition to the 10-shot advantage, Milwaukee held an advantage in corners, 7-2, in addition to committing five more fouls (17-12).
The Panthers round out their exhibition slate against Purdue on Thursday (Aug. 18) at IPFW's Soccer Showcase in Ft. Wayne, Ind. Milwaukee kicks off the regular season with the Sixth Annual Howard Johnson Milwaukee Cup, Aug. 26-28, in Milwaukee. UWM starts its season with Northwestern on Friday at Marquette's Valley Field. On Sunday, the action shifts to Engelmann Field, where the Panthers will host Illinois.
