MILWAUKEE, Wis. (Oct. 9, 2005) -
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team played to a 1-1 tie with Wright State Sunday afternoon in Horizon League action at Engelmann Field. Sophomore Amanda Winn scored the equalizer for Milwaukee (6-4-3, 3-0-1 Horizon) in the 54th minute, after the Raiders (6-4-3, 1-1-2 Horizon) scored midway through the first half.
With WSU holding a 1-0 lead, the Panthers controlled possession for much of the remainder of the game, breaking through for the equalizer early in the second frame. Sophomore Pam Shipway drew a foul a few yards from the top of the penalty area. Winn drilled the subsequent free kick far post from 25 yards out to knot the score.
UWM generated a number of scoring opportunities after the half, including a pair of goals called back by two of its six offsides calls. Junior Molly Duffy received a long pass on a close offsides call and beat WSU keeper Steph Comisar to the ball, putting it in the back of the net in the 82nd minute. In the first overtime, Duffy looked to have another chance, but was caught offsides before hitting a shot into the net.
After outshooting the visitors 8-6 in the first 45 minutes, the Panthers generated nine shots, compared to three by Wright State throughout the remainder of the match to finish with the 17-9 edge. Milwaukee also forced six more corner kicks (8-2), including all three in the second half and two more in the second overtime.
"We had the upper hand in the beginning, but Wright State neutralized what we were trying to do by not letting our outside midfielders get involved," head coach Michael Moynihan said. "At halftime we switched formations and created good chances, though we just could not finish in our attacking third."
Duffy, who has found her place as a forward after playing defense and goalkeeper earlier this season, finished with a team-high three shots, including a header just wide of the goal in the 109th minute. Senior Katie Campion also sent three shots at the goal, while Kane finished with two saves and Comisar stopped eight shots for the Raiders.
The Raiders jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first half with a set-piece goal. Megan Mattioda took a free kick from 35 yards out and sent it into the box. Lindsay Ferrau received the ball and beat freshman keeper Erin Kane for the 34th-minute score. Milwaukee's came up big, dodging a 2-0 deficit when junior Stacey Faude cleared a Wright State shot off the goal line in the 10 minutes earlier.
Milwaukee returns to action with a home match against Youngstown State Friday and a crucial league match at Detroit Sunday. The Panthers and Penguins kick off at 4 p.m., while Sunday's match is slated for a 11 a.m. central start.
