MILWAUKEE, Wis. (Oct. 28, 2005) -
Sophomore Amanda Winn scored the game's only goal in the 14th minute and freshman Erin Kane posted her school-record ninth shutout to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Colorado College Friday afternoon at Engelmann Field.
The Panthers (10-4-3) picked up the win on Senior Day to extend their unbeaten streak to nine games (8-0-1), while the Tigers (7-7-3) fell to .500 on the year.
Milwaukee controlled the momentum of the game throughout much of the first half, getting the game-winner in the 14th minute. Winn lofted a shot from 30 yards out that found the back of the net off the finger tips of CC keeper Geneva Sills for her second goal of the season.
UWM forced a number of scoring opportunities in the opening frame with two shots hitting the cross bar. Freshman Jodi Klagos lofted a shot off the bar from the top of the penalty area in the seventh minute before junior Taylor Powell followed suit in the 38th minute. Powell sent a bouncing ball through the penalty area, which Sills misjudged, before corralling the rebound.
"The first half was some of the best soccer we played all season," head coach Michael Moynihan said. "We moved the ball well, created a number of chances and got a nice goal from Amanda."
In the second half, the Panthers once again came out the aggressors, pressuring the Tiger back line relentlessly. Meanwhile, CC pushed forward for the equalizer, nearly getting it in the 72nd minute. Amara Wilson raced down a long ball and beat Kane to the ball at the edge of the six-yard box. Wilson's shot on the open net went wide and Kane was able to get back and take control of a cross off the rebound.
For the match, Milwaukee outshot its guests, 14-8, including 9-4 in the first half. The Panthers also forced six more corner kicks (9-3) on the day. In goal, Kane needed to make just one save for the shutout, while Sills finished with four for Colorado College.
Kane's nine shutouts this season surpassed the eight by Kathy Hoverman in 1998 and Liz Ulicki in 1999. She had already doubled the previous school record for shutouts by a freshman of four. The St. Charles, Ill., native ran her record to 9-4-3 this season and lowered her goals against average to 0.72.
"Erin has had such a phenomenal year," Moynihan said. "She came in with such big shoes to fill after (Kerri St. Aubin) graduated, but she has been able to do everything we have asked of her. It's good to have a freshman goalkeeper that's this good."
Seniors Janice McGann, Nicole Motl, Andrea Kramer, Katie Campion, Rebecca Englund, Elizabeth Chudy and Kitty Montgomery played their final home game for the Panthers. Chudy made her season debut after suffering a knee injury in the preseason. She started and played 20 minutes, while Montgomery did not start or play for the first time this season after suffering a knee injury last Friday. Her status is unknown for next week's league tournament.
"Today was all about the seniors and sending them out with a win," Moynihan said. "They have all have done so much for this program, it was nice that we could win this game for them."
UWM returns to action at next week's Horizon League Tournament in Green Bay, Wis. The Panthers are the top seed and will play the yet-to-be decided eighth seed Thursday (Nov. 3) at 11 a.m. in the first match of the tourney.
