Sophomore Jeremy Seibel won two events and took second in another to help pace the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's swimming & diving team to a 108-97 victory over Wheaton College on Friday night. Sophomore Chase Gravengood and freshman Robby Leibold also posted victories at the Chrouser Aquatics Center to help UWM to their first dual victory of the season.
"This was a very solid team effort all-around," Milwaukee head coach Dave Clark said. "There were a lot of season-best times tonight that helped us to the victory."
Seibel won the 500 freestyle and the 200 breaststroke courtesy of two of those season-best times. He swam the 500 free in a time of 4:52.12 and claimed the victory in the 200 breast with a time of 2:14.97. He also placed second in the 200 free with a time of 1:45.93, touched out by Wheaton's John Higgins who won with a time of 1:45.75.
Other winners included Gravengood in the 200 butterfly and Leibold in the 1000 freestyle. Gravengood took first by over three seconds with a time of 1:56.14 - his lowest of the season. Leibold claimed the first individual victory of his collegiate career with a season-best time of 9:52.00 in the 1000 free.
The team opened the night with a victory in the 400 medley relay. Sophomore Tyler Jefferson, Gravengood and seniors Kyle Fyock and Tim Watt got UWM started with a victory in the time of 3:34.44, a season-low.
The next event was the 1000 free that Leibold won. He wasn't the only Panther to score points in the event, as freshman David Adams placed second (10:03.07), senior Joe Vermeulen fourth (10:17.40) and junior Karl Winderl fifth (10:38.36) to give Milwaukee four of the top five and a quick start overall.
"The win in the relay and the 1000 free was a very solid start," Clark said. "That put us in real good shape for the rest of the meet."
The team also recorded second-place finishes in five other events: Jefferson swam a season-best time of 48.27 in the 100 free to earn a second-place showing, touched out by the Thunder's Tim Linn (48.11). Freshman Andy Barborich placed second in the 200 IM in a time of 2:01.73. Senior Ryan Frohmader was second in the 200 back in a time of 2:03.28, while the 400 free relay team of Jefferson, Frohmader, Gravengood and Watt took second with a season-best time of 3:12.68.
Leibold added a second-place showing in the 200 fly to give the Panthers a 1-2 finish in the event.
"Tonight's meet was a very good start to a very long weekend," Clark said.
There were no diving events at the meet.
The Panthers continue their busy weekend with a trip to Rochester, Mich. tomorrow for the Golden Grizzly Quadrangular Meet. They join host Oakland University, Wayne State and Cincinnati in the pool starting at noon.
