MILWAUKEE, Wis. (Oct. 21, 2005) - Junior Taylor Powell headed home an Amanda Winn free kick in the 30th minute to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team to a 1-0 win over Loyola, Friday afternoon at Engelmann Field. The win was the 100th of head coach Michael Moynihan's career.

The Panthers (9-4-3, 6-0-1 Horizon) also extended their season-long unbeaten streak to eight games (7-0-1) in clinching the Horizon League Regular Season title outright.

Junior Elicia Scaife got the game-winning play started, drawing a foul just outside the penalty area on the near side. From 25 yards out, Winn stepped up and sent the impending free kick far post, where Powell headed her second goal of the season into the back of the net for the game-winner.

Milwaukee controlled possession throughout the entire half, limiting the Ramblers to scattered, one-phase attacks. UWM outshot LUC, 13-1, in the half, forced four more corner kicks (5-1) and headed into the break with the 1-0 lead. Powell had all of her game-high five shots in the first half, sending three on goal.

"We started off the game well. In the first half, we were dominant and got a good goal," Moynihan said. "Our players moved the ball well, but we could have gone forward more and built more of a lead."

In the second half, Loyola managed to even out the pace of play a bit, but the Panthers still generated a number of scoring chances. Sophomore Joanna Severson and freshman Beth Steuer each knocked shots off the cross bar late in the match. Severson bent a free kick from the top of the penalty area in the 84th minute and Steuer had her shot glance off the front of the bar in the 87th.

For the match, Milwaukee gained a 19-5 advantage in shots and 6-3 in corners. Thirty-nine fouls were called on the day, with LUC drawing 20 and UWM 19.

Freshman Erin Kane made three saves to tie a school record with her eighth shutout of the season. Meanwhile, Emily Peick made seven stops, all in the first half, for the Ramblers.

"As a freshman, I came in with big shoes to fill. It was intimidating, but our team and the coaches helped a lot with my confidence," Kane said of her record-tying season so far. "Our back four and I work well together. We are on a good tangent right now and know what each other is going to be doing."

Moynihan is the fourth soccer coach in school history to reach 100 career wins, following current men's head coach Louis Bennett, the first men's coach Dan Harris and Brian Tompkins, who coached both the men's and women's teams.

"To be honest, I didn't know I was at 99 until 10 minutes before the game," Moynihan said. "This is really about the players. The goal is to help them win. This team won a league championship, and I'm proud of that."

UWM closes out its regular season next Friday (Oct. 28) in a non-league home match with Colorado College. The Panthers and Tigers kick off at 2:30 p.m., with a Senior Day ceremony to precede the match.
