MADISON, WIS. - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's soccer team outshot the University of Dayton 14-9 on the game and owned the two overtime periods but couldn't find the back of the net as the two teams tied 0-0 in the Big Toe Soccer Invitational here Friday (Sept. 3). UWM opened the season with a tie for just the fourth time in school history and first since 1992. The Panthers and Flyers are now both 0-0-1 on the season. "This was a hard fought battle and Dayton is a very difficult team to play against," UWM head coach Louis Bennett said. "We had a bunch of 'nearly's' tonight. We nearly strung together some passes for scoring chances and then we nearly scored some goals. We just need to take care of our chances when we get them." Milwaukee controlled much of the run of play in the first 15 minutes. Antou Jallow missed two different shots just a minute apart in the game's first five minutes before Chris Brisson narrowly missed a shot wide left with 10 minutes gone in the half. Dayton evened play up in the last 20 minutes of the frame and nearly found the back of the net but a header hit the crossbar in the 32nd minute. The Panthers pressed forward again in the second half and missed a chance on a Dale Weiler cornker kick early in the frame before Jallow just missed on a rebound opportunity. Milwaukee took six corner kicks in the second half to just two for Dayton. Neither team could dent the scoreboard in the first 90 minutes so the game went to extra time. UWM dominated possession and play in both OT's and missed two very good chances to score in the second overtime. Dale Weiler's volley to an open net just a minute into the second extra session sailed just wide while Neil Dombrowski's rocket from 20 yards was stopped thanks to a diving save by UD keeper Steve Ladislaw. MIlaukee ended up taking five more shots than Dayton to go with a nine to three corner kick advantage. Milwaukee put four of the 14 shots on frame but couldn't get the win. Kirk Thode made four saves in net to notch the 10th shutout of his career. The Panthers will look to break into the win column when they play Evansville on Sunday (Sept. 5) in the second day of the Big Toe Soccer Invitational.
