Panthers Post 4-0 Win At Detroit In League Opener

Sept. 25, 2004

Box Score

DETROIT, MICH. - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee ran its record Horizon League unbeaten streak to 25 games with a 4-0 victory over the University of Detroit-Mercy here Saturday (Sept. 25). The Panthers scored twice in each half to improve to 3-2-2 on the season and 1-0-0 in league play. The loss was the second league setback of the week for Detroit which falls to 3-4-0 overall and 1-2-0 in Horizon League action.

"We really played well today," UWM head coach Louis Bennett said. "We stayed true to the game plan and got things accomplished. Detroit is very tough and they are a good team at home. Its always nice to win your league opener."

Dan Horst, the hero of UWM's 2-1 win over UNC Wilmington on Sunday, continued his torrid play as he scored the first goal and eventual game winner in the 26th minute. Horst, who had just entered the game, collected a ball at the far post and slotted it home for his third goal of the season.

Milwaukee continued to pressure and quickly made it 2-0 just over a minute later. Dale Weiler rocketed home a shot from 15 yards out to give the Panthers the two-goal cushion. Antou Jallow and Neil Dombrowski earned assists on the play.

UWM went into the half with the 2-0 lead but wasted little time in extending the cushion in the second frame. Jallow scored his second goal of the season in the 56th minute when he snuck home a shot off of assists from Weiler and Kyle Zenoni. The senior struck again in the 65th minute when he took advantage of a goalie miscue to score the fourth and final goal of the game.

The Panthers outshot the host Titans 14-8 on the game while registering eight shots on goal to two for UDM. Eric Mickschl needed just two saves to record his first shutout of the season. The sophomore keeper is now 3-1-1 on the year with a 0.56 goals against average.

"We played our first Horizon League game of the year on the road, at a tough place, and came out with a convincing win," added Bennett. "We played well in almost all aspect while stopping what they wanted to do. It was also nice to see Antou score a couple of goals. He has been playing well for the most part so its nice to see him get a few."

Milwaukee will enjoy seven days off before returning to action next Sunday (Oct. 3) with a non-league game at Bradley University. The contest is set to begin at 3 p.m. at Shea Stadium in Peoria, Ill.
