Sophomore Elicia Scaife scored her first collegiate goal to tie the game in the 62nd minute, but a late goal proved the difference, as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team fell to Iowa State University, 2-1, Friday night in the second game of the Nike Invitational in Ames. Kickoff was delayed 81 minutes due to lightning in the area during the preceeding match.
With the Panthers trailing for much of the match, sophomore Elicia Scaife knotted the score at 1-1, hitting home a Nicole Motl free kick from 35 yards out. Motl sent a ball far post, where Scaife slipped past the keeper and volleyed a shot into the back of the net.
Just over a minute later, the Cyclones took the lead for good, 2-1, on Erin Witte's second goal of the match. Witte took advantage of a long free kick into the box, beating the Panther keeper for the score. She had gotten Iowa State got on the board first in the fifth minute converting a close-range shot near-post off a corner kick for the score.
Freshman Elizabeth Weirick made her second career appearance, replacing senior goalkeeper, Kerri St. Aubin at the end of the first half. The Michigan native re-aggravated an injury that has held her out of one match this season. The rookie shotstopper finished with three saves for the match, while the Cyclones' Jo Haig stopped four Milwaukee shots for the win.
Iowa State had the upperhand in the first half, ousthooting UWM, 6-2, and taking five of the nine first-half corner kicks. Both Panther shots were on goal, forcing Haig to make a pair of saves, while St. Aubin matched the total before leaving with 7:55 remaining in the frame.
With the loss, Milwaukee remains winless in its last seven matches (0-6-1) since a season-opening over South Dakota State. The stretch ties a school more for consecutive games without a win set in 1993. All but one loss this season has been by one goal.
This weekend's Nike Invitational wraps up with m a pair of matches on Sunday, Sept. 19. Milwaukee takes on Creighton University at noon, while the Cyclones host Youngstown State at 2:30 p.m. In the event's first match, the Bluejays routed the Penguins, 8-1.
