Late Goal Pushes #13 Coastal Carolina Past UWM 1-0

Sept. 17, 2004

CONWAY, S.C. - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and #13 Coastal Carolina University played even soccer for the majority of the game here Friday (Sept. 17) before CCU's Peter Louis scored in the 87th minute to give the homestanding Chanticleers a hard-fought 1-0 victory. The game was nearly even in every single category but UWM couldn't find the back of the net early on and failed to score the equalizer late in the game. With the win, Coastal improves to 5-0-0 on the year while Milwaukee falls to 1-2-2.

"This was an NCAA Tournament caliber contest tonight," UWM head coach Louis Bennett said. "Our offensive tactics worked and we really frustrated them at times. Their keeper made some incredible saves and they eventually capitalized. Coastal Carolina is easily one of the top teams in the country."

The two teams played back-and-forth soccer in the first half amidst a torrential downpour thanks to Hurricane Ivan. CCU outshot UWM 7-6 in the frame but the Panthers had a couple of golden scoring opportunities. Chris Brisson's shot was stopped by Coastal keeper Aaron Weant. Milwuakee then reloaded and Antou Jallow's volley appeared to be heading towards the back of the net but Weant made a sprawling save to clear it off the line.

Both teams continued to battle into the second half with both defenses coming up big to keep it a scoreless game. While the wet and sloppy conditions made things tough the Panthers continued to pressure the CCU defense. Milwaukee nearly scored again in the second half but Weant made another fabulous save on a shot from Neil Dombrowski.

With the game seemingly heading to extra time the host Chanticleers found the back of the net with just over three minutes to play. Coastal took possession of the ball near midfield and worked the ball to Joseph Kabwe. Kabwe then sent a long pass to Peter Louis who snuck a shot past UWM keeper Eric Mickschl for the eventual game-winner.

The Panthers continued to push forward in the game's final minutes but could not net the equalizer. CCU finished the game with 16 shots to UWM's 15 while the Panthers registered seven corner kicks to six for the Chants. Weant finished the game with six saves while Mickschl stopped four Coastal shots.

"This was a very good performance and probably one of the best 85 minutes I've seen us play in a long time," added Bennett. "However, we aren't in a position to just be happy with good performances. While we are still struggling to score we are starting to put more shots on target and that is encouraging. Coastal has some fabulous individual players and they will be a major force in the NCAA Tournament."

UWM will enjoy tomorrow off but will stay along the Atlantic Coast for a Sunday (Sept. 19) tilt at UNC-Wilmington. The game is set to begin at 12 p.m. on the UNCW campus.
