Box Score Sept. 12, 2004
MILWAUKEE, Wis. -
Junior Andrea Kramer and freshman Sarah Freidel each tallied a goal and assist to stake the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team to a 2-1, but it could not hold on, falling to DePaul University, 3-2, in double overtime Saturday afternoon at Engelmann Field. Julianne Stich scored the golden goal in the 109th minute to lead the Blue Demons to victory.
"The match could have been won in regulation," head coach Michael Moynihan said. "There were a couple opportunities that could have been the difference."
With DePaul pushing late in the second overtime, the Panthers tried to clear the ball from the penalty area, but was unsuccessful, as multiple balls were headed in and out of the box. One such ball fell to the ground in front of Stich, who put a shot into the net from five yards away.
"It's frustrating to lose like that," Moynihan said. "We pretty much gifted it to them in the box. It was a soft clear right to their best player and she did what she should have when she is inside the box."
After surrendering a goal just three minutes in, UWM came back to knot the score at one apiece four minutes later. Kramer sent a pass from midfield to junior Elizabeth Chudy who flicked a header on to Freidel. The Madison-native held off a DePaul defender to finish from 10 yards out.
"(Sarah) just puts it out there all the time," Moynihan said. "She is probably our most assertive midfielder in getting forward, and likes to get to the goal. She scored a goal, had a couple of other good chances and caused some problems today for DePaul.
Kramer and Freidel hooked up again just after halftime, putting Milwaukee up, 2-1, in the 49th minute. Freidel sent a ball forward to Kramer streaking down the middle of the field, where she was able to chip the ball over the keeper just inside the penalty area.
Lauren Spacht broke through for the first score of the game in the fourth minute. Fending off a Panther player, Spacht drove into the right side of the box and sent a shot far post to make it 1-0. In the 71st minute, Lea Hill made a similar move, sending a shot near post to tie the game at 2-2.
The match was a physical one, while both teams were evenly matched throughout. DePaul held the advantage in shots, 20-15, while UWM had two more shots go on goal (9-7). Milwaukee also forced four corner kicks, compared to two by the opposition.
Senior Kerri St. Aubin made four saves for the Panthers, while Lindsey Deason made six saves for DePaul. A seventh UWM shot was saved by a Blue Demon defender, when freshman Elizabeth McNally tried to capitalize on an empty net from a Milwaukee corner kick.
UWM heads back to the road when it travels to Ames, Iowa, for the Nike Invitational, hosted by Iowa State University. The Panthers take on the host Cyclones on Friday at 7:30 p.m., before taking on Creighton University on Sunday at noon.
