MILWAUKEE, Wis. - Senior Kim Grodek scored two first-half goals to lead Indiana University to a 2-1 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team in the championship game of the Howard Johnson Milwaukee Cup, Sunday afternoon at Englemann Field. The Panthers finished second in the tournament with a 1-1 record, while the Hoosiers won both of their games for the title. Grodek got IU on the board with a goal off a free kick in the sixth minute. After a UWM foul, Grodek launched her shot from 40 yards away just under the cross bar. Senior keeper Kerri St. Aubin made the initial save, but was unable to coral the ball as it crossed the line, making it 1-0. In the 33rd minute, it became 2-0 on Grodek's fifth goal of the weekend. Lindsay McCarthy got an assist on the play after sending an initial shot wide of St. Aubin's outstretched arms from just right of the goal. Grodek came down the middle of the box and found the back of the net with one touch. "Our team played extremely well," said head coach Michael Moynihan. "I was very pleased with the effort and battle that they put up (after falling behind early, 2-0). The first goal was disheartening, but I thought we responded, put them under pressure and put ourselves in a position to force overtime." Tempo in the second half was fairly even with, neither team generating many scoring chances, until Milwaukee made it 2-1 in the 74th minute. After scoring her first career goal on Friday, junior Andrea Kramer came through with her second tally of the season off an assist from sophomore Val Cooper. Cooper sent a free kick into the penalty area from just beyond midfield, where Kramer took two touches and slid the ball past the IU goalkeeper. "(Andrea) is in a position that enables her more (to score goals)," said Moynihan. " In the midfield she worries a lot about her defensive responsibilities. Her strength (as a forward) is her deceptive speed. Today her goal was because she was opportunistic. As she plays up there more, she will continue to be more dangerous." Following the goal, the Panthers increased the pressure on Indiana, but was unable to threaten for a game-tying goal. In goal, St. Aubin made six saves in goal to pick up the decision for UWM, as her counterpart, Lauren Fabbro, made four stops for the win. Kramer highlighted three Black and Gold players named to the all-tournament team. Sophomore Elicia Scaife joined the Minnesota native, as did freshman Pam Shipway. Grodek, Lindsay McCarthy, Missy Vierling and Megan Pipkens represented the Hoosiers. Milwaukee returns to actionat the Jayhawk Tournament, Sept. 3-5, hosted by the University of Kansas. The Panthers play the host Jayhawks on Friday at 5 p.m., before taking on Mississippi State University on Sunday at noon. Howard Johnson Milwaukee Cup
