MILWAUKEE, Wis. -
Junior Andrea Kramer scored her first career goal to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee to a 2-0 win over South Dakota State University Friday night at Valley Field in the opening game of the Howard Johnson Milwaukee Cup. For South Dakota State, the match was the university's first Division I event since moving up from Division II this season.
UWM (1-0) dominated the game's tempo fom the outset, controlling possession and outshooting the Jackrabbits (0-1), 14-0 in the first half, but could not score in the frame. Despite not allowing a shot, the Panthers played clean in the field, not committing a foul until after halftime.
"If you look at our team over the years we have a very defensive mindset," said head coach Michael Moynihan. "We came out very timid offensively, though we didn't give up a shot, offensively we really didn't create the offensive chances we should have."
Milwaukee broke through in the 52nd minute when Kramer forced a SDSU turnover at the top of the penalty area. The turnover created a 1v1 with the goalkeeper and Kramer found the back of the net for her first career marker, and what proved to be the game-winner.
Sophomore Taylor Powell made it 2-0 with a goal of her own in the 74th minute. Freshman Pam Shipway collected a loose ball on the left side and sent a centering pass to Powell, who headed it past Jackrabbit keeper Jenn Davis for the score.
"Pam and Joanna (Severson) played a great game in the midfield together," said Moynihan. "That really helped us link things forward for us."
Senior Kerri St. Aubin stopped two shots in goal to get the shutout for UWM, while Davis stopped 10 Milwaukee attempts.
For the game, the Panthers outshot the Jacks, 22-3, and gained an 8-1 advantage on corner kicks. The Black and Gold was also called for just four fouls on the night, to go with South Dakota State's 15.
The Milwaukee Cup continues Sunday, Aug. 29, at Englemann Field. Marquette University takes on the Jackrabbits at noon, before the Panthers host Indiana University at 2:30 p.m.
