ST. PAUL, MINN. -
Don Gramenz, a former team captain for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's soccer team, was recently named to the Minnesota Thunder Hall of Fame following an impressive 13-year career with the "A" League franchise. Gramenz became just the sixth player in Thunder history to be named to the Hall of Fame, joining former Panthers Gerard Lagos, Manny Lagos, and Tony Sanneh in the illustrious group.
"I think it is a well deserved honor. Everywhere Don has gone he has been a major influence," UWM head coach Louis Bennett said. "Here he elevated himself from walk-on to captain, and he has continued to show huge character in his pro career in Minnesota. I am just very happy for him and it couldn't happen to a better guy. It is most deserving."
Gramenz played at UWM from 1990-93 and was a member of the 1990 NCAA Tournament team. A native of Cottage Grove, Minn., Gramenz appeared in 70 games during his four-year Panther career and scored 57 points on 19 goals and 19 assists. The 5-6 midfielder started 61 of the 70 games he appeared in and his 19 assists are still good for ninth on UWM's all-time list. In addition to his impressive numbers, Gramenz was also named the team's Most Improved Player following the 1991 season in addition to being honored with the Coach's Award in 1993.
Following his Panther playing days Gramenz competed for the hometown Thunder for 13 seasons while appearing in 212 games. Gramenz finished his career with 17 goals and 28 assists, ranking tenth all-time in goals and fourth in Thunder history in assists.
