DES MOINES, Iowa -
Senior goalkeeper Kerri St. Aubin collected five saves to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team to a 0-0 tie against Drake University in the exhibition opener for both clubs, Thursday night in Des Moines, Iowa.
"For our first outing it was a fairly even game," said head coach Michael Moynihan. "There are plenty of things to work on, but it's still the first exhibition game."
Milwaukee was strongest in the second half, gaining possesion and doubling their shot total from the first frame with four. Its best scoring opportunity came in the 80th minute when sophomore Val Cooper drilled a Panther free kick that hit the cross bar.
"We got stronger as the game went on," said Moynihan. "Our freshmen also stepped in and played well. It was all very encouraging."
The Bulldogs had controlled play early in the match, dominating possession and outshooting the Panthers, 5-2 in the first half.
For the game, the Panthers were outshot, 10-6, while also conceding the edge in corner kicks, 2-1. Drake keeper Kate Stack did not need to make a save in matching St. Aubin's shutout performance.
UWM closes out the exhibition season with its annual match against the Panther alumni, Sunday, Aug. 22, at Engelmann Field. The regular season kicks off at the Howard Johnson Milwaukee Cup, Aug. 27, at Valley Field. The Panthers square off with South Dakota State at 6 p.m. in the day's first game.
