MILWAUKEE -
Dale Weiler and Chris Brisson hooked up for a pair of goals in the first nine minutes of the game to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's soccer team to a 4-0 victory over Cleveland State University in Horizon League Tournament Quarterfinal action here Saturday (Nov. 6). With the win, UWM improves to 11-4-3 on the season while advancing to Friday's league tournament semifinal at Engelmann Field. With the loss, Cleveland State's season ends with a 5-11-2 record.
"The team really played well today," UWM head coach Louis Bennett said. "Cleveland State is a tough team to play against and they have some solid guys on offense. We were able to score early and take control of the game."
Milwaukee wasted little time in grabbing the upper-hand thanks to a goal in the game's second minute. Chris Brisson controlled the ball on the right side and sent a crossing pass near the left post. The 6-3 Weiler leaped and headed the ball inside the far post for his second goal of the seson.
The forward combo connected for a second goal less than seven minutes later, this time reversing roles. Weiler streaked down the left side and lofted a perfectly placed ball across the goal mouth. Brisson beat his mark, waited for the ball and headed it home at the near post to give UWM the 2-0 lead.
Milwaukee took a 2-0 lead into the second half and quickly extended its cushion. The Panthers intercepted a pass near midfield and eventually played the ball to Weiler on the left. The sophomore made two nifty moves, beat two CSU defenders and lofted a shot over Viking keeper Amir Kettani into the back of the net from a tough angle. It was the first two-goal game of Weiler's career while the five points in a game are a career-high.
The Panthers finished the scoring in the 84th minute in record fashion. Freshman midfielder Dan Zelasko dribbled to the penalty area from about 30 yards out and slipped a pass between two CSU defenders to Antou Jallow. Jallow collected the ball and snuck a shot underneath Kettani for his league-leading 13th goal of the season. Furthermore, the goal was the 55th in Jallow's career, putting him alone atop the Horizon League's all-time goals scored list.
"I was glad Antou was able to get the record today in front of the home crowd," added Bennett. "He is very deserving and he has been a very dangerous player since he first stepped foot on campus."
UWM outshot Cleveland State 17 to seven on the game while the Vikings held a slight 11-10 edge in corner kicks. Sophomore goalkeeper Eric Mickschl stopped three Viking shots to record his eighth win and fourth shutout of the season. In addition, Mickschl lowered his league-best goals against average to 0.68.
The Panthers will now host the two league semifinal contests on Friday (Nov. 12) and the championship game on Sunday (Nov. 14). No. 3 seed Detroit advanced to Friday's first semifinal with a 1-0 victory over UW-Green Bay and will face the winner of the Butler/Loyola contest. UWM will play in the second semifinal versus the Wright State/UIC winner. The first semifinal is set for 11:00 a.m. with the second game scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m. Sunday's title game is scheduled for a noon kickoff.
