Box Score

MILWAUKEE - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee scored two early goals and posted its third straight shutout while ending Wright State University's season with a 3-0 victory in semifinal action of the 2004 Horizon League Men's Soccer Tournament here Friday (Nov. 12). The Panthers, who won for the ninth straight time, improved to 12-4-3 on the season while WSU ended the campaign with a 7-12-1 mark. The Panthers will now face the University Detroit-Mercy in Sunday's championship match.

Milwaukee took control of the game from the very beginning and grabbed a 1-0 lead on a Chris Brisson goal in the 7th minute. Brisson headed home a shot inside the far post after a long crossing pass from sophomore Dale Weiler. The goal was the second of the year for Brisson while Weiler handed out his 13th assist of the season.

The Panthers grabbed a 2-0 lead less than three minutes later on an Antou Jallow penalty kick. The penalty was setup when Neil Dombrowski was tackled from behind just six yards from the goalkeeper. Jallow nailed his first PK attempt of the year for his league-leading 14th goal.

UWM took a 2-0 lead into the halftime break and continued to control the run of play through much of the rest of the second half. The Panthers eventually scored another insurance tally in the 81st minute for the final three-goal cushion. Dan Zelasko received the ball near the top of the box, beat a few defenders and slid a pass behind the defense. Dombrowski corraled Zelasko's pass and tucked a shot underneath the outstretched arms of WSU keeper Jason Balach for his second goal of the season.

Milwaukee outshot the visitors 11-7 on the game and registered a 4-3 edge in corner kicks. However, UWM was whistled for 27 fouls to just 14 for Wright State while the two teams combined for seven cautions. The victory was UWM's second this season versus Wright State and eighth straight dating back to 1999.

The Panthers will take the program's third-longest winning streak into Sunday's finale with Detroit. UWM will be playing in its fourth straight Horizon League Championship game with victories coming in each of the last two seasons. Detroit will bring a 14-5-0 record into the title game while winning 11 of its last 12 matches. Gametime is set for 12 p.m. at Engelmann Field. The winner of the championship match will receive the league's automatic berth into the 2004 NCAA Tournament.
