MILWAUKEE -
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's soccer team took 13 shots in the second half and overtime but couldn't break through a stingy defense as UWM and Bradley University played to a 1-1 tie here Sunday (Oct. 3) afternoon. Milwaukee outshot the Braves 23-8 on the game while moving to 3-2-3 on the season. With the tie, Bradley moves to 5-4-1 on the year.
"For a spectator, this was a really fun soccer game to watch," UWM head coach Louis Bennett said. "However, as a coach you would like to come away with a win when you have that many chances. Their goalkeeper made some really nices saves. Bradley is a good solid team that is really tenacious. It was a back-and-forth game all day."
Playing with a strong wind, Milwaukee controlled much of the play in the first half. Antou Jallow nearly broke the scoreless tie in the 11th minute but his 25-yard rocket sailed just high. The Panthers eventually broke through in the 13th minute after one of their four first half corner kicks.
Dale Weiler sent the ball into the box where it bounced around between the two teams. Bradley attempted to clear it but the ball bounced right to UWM defender Trent Furtsch who headed the ball into the back of the net for the game's first goal. The goal was the first of the season for the senior defender and the second of his career.
Milwaukee nearly made it 2-0 in the 26th minute but BU goalkeeper Chris Dunsheath made two solid saves to keep it a one-goal game. Kyle Zenoni's open shot from four yards out was snuffed by Dunsheath who then collected the five-yard rebound attempt from Neil Dombrowski.
Bradley took advantage of the momentum from that moment and quickly tied the game in the next minute. BU's Luke Kreamalmeyer had a ball played to him in the penalty area where he was then taken down. The referee awarded Bradley a penalty kick and Kreamalmayer slipped it into the lower right corner of the goal to knot the game at one.
The two teams played into the second half with Bradley taking advantage of the wind. Panther keeper Eric Mickschl stopped a BU header late in the second half to keep it 1-1 while Dunsheath stopped a low shot from Chris Brisson. UWM took eight shots in the second half to two for the Braves while also winning the corner kick battle 4-2.
Milwaukee had the best of the scoring chances in the overtime as the Braves needed a team save from Joe Ducci to save the game. The Panthers took a free kick from 30 yards out and freshman Troy Spielmann sent a low line-drive into the penalty box. Senior Ian Hoelker sent the ball in at the far post but Ducci snuck in and cleared the ball out before it crossed the goal line. Milwaukee had a few more chances later in the second extra period but couldn't capitalize.
"I thought when we scored that goal in the first half it would be enough to win the game but they came back and got the PK," Bennett added. "We had a lot of opportunities but just couldn't put the ball away. We've had a lot of overtime games this year so we are used to this kind of action."
Jallow and Weiler led UWM with five shots apiece as the Panthers put 10 of their 23 shots on target. Adam Hage led the Braves with two shots with four of their seven shots directed toward the frame. Mickschl made three saves while running his 2004 record to 3-1-1. Dunsheath made eight saves while improving to 4-0-9 in his career in 13 overtime games.
Milwaukee will return to action Wednesday (Oct. 6) with an instate showdown with Wisconsin. The game is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. at the McClimon Soccer Complex in Madison.
