STRONGSVILLE, Ohio - Freshman Elizabeth McNally scored a goal in her second-straight game to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team to a 1-0 victory over Cleveland State University Sunday afternoon in Strongsville.

With the win, the Panthers (5-6-2, 3-0 Horizon) open their league schedule 3-0 for the sixth year in a row, while it was the first Horizon League match in team history for the first-year Vikings (0-12, 0-1 Horizon).

Milwaukee came out aggressive against CSU, generating multiple scoring chances in the game's opening minutes. Just 30 seconds in, junior Elizabeth Chudy created a close-range opportunity, but sent her shot into the gut of Cleveland State keeper Ashley Kidwell.

"In the first five minutes, we had four great scoring oppotunities," head coach Michael Moynihan said. "Through the normal run of the game we did alright. It's just our finishing wasn't effective. There were some poor quality shots and we were not organizing."

McNally scored the game-winner in just the 12th minute, converting on one-of-seven UWM corner kicks in the match. Sophomore Val Cooper sent a corner into the box to junior Katie Campion. Campion flicked the ball on to McNally, who one-timed the ball into the net.

"For Cleveland, the longer we went without scoring the better it is for them," Moynihan said. "It makes them hungry, and they were playing hard to the end."

UWM dominated the box score, outshooting CSU, 27-4, and taking seven corner kicks compared to one by the home team. Chudy led the Black & Gold attack with seven shots, while McNally took six shots, including five on goal.

"We never felt threatened," Moynihan said. "We scored early, which is nice, but we should have scored more."

Senior goalkeeper Kerri St. Aubin had a relatively easy match, collecting two saves for her third shutout of the season. Kidwell made 13 stops of her own, as the Vikings held an opponent to one goal for the second time this season.

The Panthers return to Ohio a week from today, playing Wright State on Sunday, Oct. 10, in Dayton. The Raiders (6-4-1, 2-1 Horizon) are second in the Horizon League standings behind first-place Milwaukee.
