MILWAUKEE, Wis. -
Senior Michael Belting won three events, while junior Kyle Fyock finished second three times, to lead the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's swimming & diving team to a 106-99 win over Wheaton College Friday night at the Klotsche Center.
"The events we are strong in, the distance and freestyles, we did very well in," head coach Dave Clark said. "Diving is one of our strengths as well, and when you can win without diving (which was not competed because Wheaton does not have diving), it is a good sign."
Belting was victorious in both the 200 and 500 freestyle and swam with the first-place 400 free relay. In the 200 free, he paced the field with a time of 1:46.17. He would come back to post a time of 4:49.25 in winning the 500 free.
"Distance events in our program are our strengths," Clark said. "Michael happens to be the head of a very strong distance class."
With the Panthers trailing by two, Belting teamed with juniors Ryan Frohmader and Tim Watt and freshman Chase Gravengood to win the final event of the night, the 400 free relay, with a time of 3:14.18.
"If we looked at the freestyle events, if we did not win them, we dominated them with second and thir-place finishes," Clark said. "If it came down to the freestyle relay (to win the meet), I knew we'd be in good shape. It was a very good swim, and our best time of the season by a ways."
Fyock began his day in the 50 free, where his time of 22.12 was just 0.06 seconds of the lead time. Senior Adam Steffes took third in the event in 22.56. In the 100 free, Fyock once again finished with a teammate, taking second in 49.63, just ahead of Watt's third-place time of 49.73. He later was second in the 200 breaststroke, as well, touching the wall in 2:17.96.
In back-to-back events, Gravengood posted a pair of top-two finishes, winning the 200 butterfly after finishing second in the 200 individual medley. The freshman had a good jump on the field in the 200 fly, posting a time of 1:59.91 and finishing ahead of teammate, sophomore Karl Winderl, in third place (2:06.54). Gravengood had previously swam a 1:57.93 in his second-place 200 IM performance.
Freshman Jeremy Seibel led a pack of four Panthers atop the standings in the 1000 free, completing the distance in 10:23.38. Junior Joe Vermeulen finished second in 10:36.94, while junior Jason Schiessl was close behind in third at 10:45.35. Winderl exhibitioned the event, but posted the fourth-fastest time of 10:50.25.
Milwaukee also got a pair top-three finishes in the 200 backstroke. Frohmader finished second in 2:04.61 with freshman Ross Bittner finishing in 2:05.98 to capture third.
UWM wastes little time, traveling to Rochester, Mich., for a triangular tomorrow (Oct. 30) with Wayne State and host-Oakland. The Panthers hit the pool at 1 p.m.
