MILWAUKEE -
Things couldn't have gone much better for Antou Jallow and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's soccer team here Tuesday (Oct. 26). Jallow scored two goals and tied the school-record for most career goals while UWM defeated crosstown rival Marquette 3-1 to reclaim the Milwaukee Cup. Milwaukee, winners of five straight, are now 8-4-3 on the season while Marquette falls to 4-10-1 on the year.
Milwaukee wasted little time in grabbing the lead thanks to a set piece goal in the 11th minute. Dale Weiler sent a corner kick to the far post to the head of Jallow. Antou headed it back across the net where Kyle Zenoni tapped it in for his second goal of the season.
Jallow and the Panthers struck again at the 13:01 mark thanks to another Weiler setup. The sophomore streaked down the left side and crossed a ball towards the goal. Craig Mallace headed it towards the net and Jallow drove home a diving header for the eventual game-winner. UWM then controlled much of the rest of the first half en route to the 2-0 halftime lead.
The Weiler-Jallow combo proved dangerous again in the 67th minute as they teamed up for the record-tying goal. Weiler streaked down the left side and sent a long, high, perfectly placed ball towards the penalty box. Jallow, who beat his mark, headed a shot home at the near post for the 3-0 cushion. The goal was the 11th of the season for the senior but, more importantly, the 53rd of his career, tying him with 2002 US World Cup star Tony Sanneh for the top spot on UWM's career list. With his next goal Jallow will not only break the UWM career goals record but will tie Jorge Ferreira of Detroit (1995-98) for the top spot on the Horizon League career goals list with 54.
"Really, that last goal came pretty easily," Weiler said. "I got open there on the wing and just sent a cross towards the middle. I knew Antou would be there waiting and he was. It is nice to be a part of the record-tying goal."
Marquette fired back and scored its lone goal of the game at the 67:53 mark to cut the lead to 3-1. Matt Blouin beat the Panther defense and volleyed a ball to Chris Lee. Lee then beat UWM keeper Eric Mickschl to the far post in a one-one-one situation. The Golden Eagles pressed forward late in the game but couldn't dent the Panther defense.
MU took 10 total shots on the game to six for UWM. However, five of Milwaukee's shots were on target to just one for Marquette. With the win, Mickschl improved his record in goal to 6-3-1. Weiler now has 11 assists on the season, good for 0.733 per game and fourth best in the nation.
"It's really an honor to share the record with such a wonderful player like Tony Sanneh," Jallow said. "It was just a really great day. We beat Marquette at home, I tied the record and my mother was here from Sweden to watch. Most importantly, the team is beginning to peak at the right time of the season."
Milwaukee will stay at home and host Butler University in a crucial Horizon League match on Friday (Oct. 29). UWM sits at 4-1 in league play while the Bulldogs will come to town with a perfect 5-0 mark in the loop. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m. at Engelmann Field.
