MILWAUKEE -
Cliff Ellsworth scored two goals and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee scored three first half goals en route to an easy 5-1 victory over the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay in Horizon League men's soccer action here Wednesday (Oct. 13). The Panthers scored in the game's first 10 minutes and never looked back while evening their overall record to 4-4-3 and 2-1-0 in league action. With the loss UWGB falls to 5-7-1 overall and 2-2-0 in league play.
Milwaukee thoroughly dominated the game from the beginning which led to a goal at the 9:03 mark. Dale Weiler launched a corner kick from the right side into the penalty box where the 6-3 Ian Hoelker headed it past UWGB keeper Pat Czuprynski for his first goal of the year. The Panthers continued to press forward in the early part of the game and gained a man advantage in the 19th minute.
The Panthers began the play with a corner kick and a flurry in front of the net. With the ball bouncing towards the edge of the penalty area UWM's Antou Jallow went to retrive the loose ball only to be taken down from behind by Czuprynski. The referee gave Czuprynski a red card on the play which led to the man advantage for the Panthers.
UWM wasted little time taking advantage of the situation by scoring on the ensuing set piece. Neil Dombrowski took a free kick along the end line and lined a shot to the goal mouth. There a sliding Jallow tapped it near post and past Phoenix reserve keeper Dave Palmer. The Panthers made it 3-0 in the 27th minute when Weiler sailed a pass to Jallow who one touched it to Cliff Ellsworth who tapped it in at the far post.
"I think we started the game off very well and than continued on," UWM head coach Louis Bennett said. "We had the right people at the right places and that led to some goals. Obviously it helped when their keeper was sent off but we were playing very well before that."
UWGB continued to battle as the second half began and eventually scored in the 62nd minute. The Phoenix sent a ball into the penalty box where it was knocked around by numerous players. Midfielder Lati Ziba was able to collect the ball and send a shot past a diving Kirk Thode to cut the lead to 3-1.
The run was shortlived, however, as Ellsworth scored his second goal of the game less than five minutes later. The senior took a long pass, beat his mark to the top of the penalty box and ripped a shot to the right of a diving Palmer. The Panthers put the finishing touch on the victory in the final minute when Steve Sperl volleyed home a long pass from Adam Gehrt at the 89:34 mark.
"We put the experienced guys out there and we tried to create familiar scoring chances," noted Bennett. "Then, when we scored off of those chances I think we realized how good we can play. I thought Dale Weiler was very good today and it's nice to see Cliff Ellsworth get a couple of goals."
Milwaukee outshot the visitors 25-6 on the day with 13 of the shots coming on goal. UWM also registered 12 corner kicks to just two for the Phoenix. Palmer allowed four goals to go with seven saves for UWGB while Thode notched two saves while registering the win.
The Panthers will enjoy a day off before returning to Horizon League action on Friday (Oct. 15). UWM will remain at home and host Wright State University at 3:00 p.m. at Engelmann Field.
