DAYTON, Ohio -
Senior Sara Lewis and sophomore Val Cooper provided the scoring, and senior Kerri St. Aubin made six saves to pick up the shutout, as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee women's soccer team picked up a 2-0 win at Wright State University, Sunday afternoon, in Dayton.
With the win, the Panthers (6-6-2, 4-0 Horizon) moved into first place in the Horizon League standings with 12 points, leap-frogging the Raiders (7-5-1, 3-1-1 Horizon) with 10 points.
"It was a great win for us," head coach Michael Moynihan said. We controlled the majority of the match."
Milwaukee got on the board 29 seconds before halftime, when Lewis knocked in her second goal of the season in the 45th minute. Sophomore Stacey Faude began the scoring play with a cross to junior Elizabeth Chudy. Chudy flicked a head ball on to Lewis, who finished for the game-winner.
Cooper capitalized on a WSU hand ball to provide an insurance goal in the 63rd minute. The Illinois native tallied her first collegiate goal on a direct kick from the top of the penalty area. Cooper's shot was the only attempt taken by the Panthers in the second half.
"They had a couple of free kicks and a flurry," Moynihan said, "but we controlled them well. Rebecca Englund played really good and Melissa Ricter dominted the midfield for us."
Wright State gained the advantage in shots, 11-5, but St. Aubin was able to control each attempt and stopped all six shots that went on goal. The senior keeper's counterpart, Steph Comisar, entered the match leading the league in goals against average and made one save of her own.
"Statistically, they outshot us," Moynihan said. "A lot of those shots were longer shots and S.A. was able to control them. They had probably two dangerous chances and she came up big."
UWM has now won five straight, and lost just once in the last 13 meetings against the Raiders, while also extending its unbeaten streak to six games (5-0-1) this season. In that span, Milwaukee has outscored opponents, 14-2, and posted four shutouts.
The Panthers have a shot turnaorund, playing at Loyola on Wednesday (Oct. 13) before returning home for their first home match in almost a month on Sunday (Oct. 17). UWM hosts league rival Butler on Sunday at noon, while its match with the Ramblers is slated for a 7 p.m. kick-off.
