MILWAUKEE - Alejandro Diaz's goal just 48 seconds into overtime broke the hearts of the No. 14 University of Wisconsin Milwaukee men's soccer team while shocking 912 fans Saturday (Sept. 6) at Engelmann Field. The Pioneers played the nationally-ranked Panthers tough all day long and eventually capitalized in overtime to hand UWM its first loss in 17 regular season games, and first home loss in 14 contests. With the win, Denver improves to 1-2 while Milwaukee falls to 2-1.

"I give Denver all the credit in the world," UWM head coach Louis Bennett said. "To come and play like this in front of a crowd like this is impressive. They were resiliant and had a great game plan. We made two defensive mistakes and they took advantage of one in overtime to get the game-winner."

The Panthers had numerous chances to win the game, as two different shots drilled the crossbar in the second half. Trent Furtsch's high-arching shot from 35 yards out hit the post in the 60th minute while Hermann Trophy candidate Antou Jallow drilled the bar in the 89th minute, narrowly missing the game-winner. UWM outshot Denver 15-8 on the game while taking six corner kicks to the Pioneers five.

"It is a rarity that we show inadequacies in front of the goal but we just didn't take advantage of our chances," Bennett added. "That is soccer. A game like this shows that any team can beat any other team, regardless of where the game is played."

The game was the second of the 31st annual Coca-Cola/Panther Invitational as Alabama A&M defeated Cal Poly 2-1 in overtime in the tourney's first contest. Sunday's first game between Denver and Cal Poly is set to begin at 12 p.m. while UWM and Alabama A&M is set to kickoff at 2:30 p.m.
