MILWAUKEE - It must be something about the innercity rivalry that gets Elizabeth Chudy fired up. The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee sophomore and Milwaukee-native burned the crosstown rival, Marquette University, with an overtime goal to lift the Panthers to a 3-2 win here Wednesday (Sept. 24). Chudy, who scored a late goal to tie last year's UWM-MU contest, scored the second overtime, game-winning goal of her career and first of this season. The Panthers have now won two straight games to improve to 2-5-1 while Marquette falls to 4-4-1.

"This was just a very exciting and well played soccer game," UWM head coach Michael Moynihan said. "We came out early and really pressured them and then they were relentless early in the second half. We started the game with a lot of confidence and that really helped. Getting a goal in the first half helped us to relax."

Milwaukee took advantage of the game early and outshot Marquette 7-3 in the first half. Moments after Chudy narrowly missed finishing a header, UWM took a 1-0 lead at the 38:38 mark. Jeney Walter tapped a free kick to Ginny Graczyk who curled home a beautiful shot from 24 yards out. The Panthers quickly made it 2-0 less than five minutes later when Evann Franklin scored her first goal of the season. The senior beat MU keeper Katie Bissen, thanks to assists from Taylor Powell and Katie Campion. UWM went into the half with a 2-0 lead, their first halftime lead of the season.

"I really liked the way we played in the first half," added Moynihan. "Evann Franklin came in and gave us a huge spark. Her energy helped us and I thought Jeney Walter and Melissa Ricter were very good in the midfield. They distributed the ball well and their work rate was fantastic."

Marquette, a strong second half team in 2003, struck quickly in the start of the second frame to cut the UWM lead in half. Julie Thompson beat UWM reserve keeper Molly Schneider at 46:09 after a long Anne Ioder pass cleared the penalty area. The Golden Eagles continued to control the tempo and eventually tied the game at the 58:32 mark when Beth McGill back heeled a shot home off of assists from Ioder and Kristen Jensen.

Both teams created numerous chances late in the second half and MU keeper Katie Bissen stopped a one-on-one with Erin Shaughnessy in the 85th minute to preserve the tie. Marquette took six second half shots to UWM's three, while Marquette created three corner kick opportunites. However, neither team could find the net and the two teams were headed for overtime for the fourth time in the 11 meetings between the schools.

Overtime became Chudy-time for UWM as the forward eventually connected at the 95:44 mark. The sophomore, who narrowly missed a shot a few minutes earlier, played a ball to Franklin who tapped it back to Chudy where she drilled a left-footed shot to the near post for the game-winner. The Panthers eventually outshot Marquette 12-9 on the match while Bissen stopped four shots and UWM's keeper combo of Kerri St. Aubin and Schneider combined to make three saves.

The Panthers will return to Engelmann Field and Horizon League action on Sunday when Wright State University comes to town for a 2:30 p.m. showdown.
