Sept. 21, 2003

Box Score

GREEN BAY, WIS. - If this weekend is any indication, it appears as if the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's soccer team is back. The back-to-back Horizon League regular season champions claimed the 2003 Green Bay/FILA Classic with a 3-0 blanking of the University of Vermont here Sunday (Sept. 21). The Panthers, who shutout UMKC 4-0 on Saturday, improved to 5-3-0 on the season while UVM fell to 0-4-3.

"This was a good weekend for us," UWM head coach Louis Bennett said. "We took care of some things here that we hadn't been taking care of recently. We got to see some new players perform while seeing some older guys really step it up a notch. It's nice to play Milwaukee soccer again."

UWM got on the board first in the first half, thanks to a Bobby Lish penalty kick. The chance was created when Tournament Most Valuable Player Tighe Dombrowski was taken down in the penalty box, stopping a sure scoring chance. Lish drilled the penalty into the upper right post to give the Panthers the 1-0 lead. Milwaukee outshot the Catamounts 7-5 in the first stanza while creating numerous scoring opportunities.

Milwaukee continued to pressure the UVM defense, which resulted in a goal less than six minutes into the second half. Kyle Zenoni sent a looping corner kick into the box to Antou Jallow, who headed it to Dombrowski who scored on a sliding touch to the far post. The goal for Dombrowski was his fourth of the season and fourth of the tournament. The Panthers added a third goal in the 73rd minute, capitalizing on a beautiful scoring chance. Trent Furtsch raced down the left sideline and sent a crossing pass to the near post, where a diving Jallow headed it home past a diving Vermont keeper. Junior goalkeeper Kirk Thode enjoyed another fine effort, as he posted his second shutout in as many games. As mentioned, Dombrowski was named the Tournament MVP while Furtsch, Lish, Kyle Zenoni, and Adam Gehrt were honored on the All-Tournament team.

"When we aren't surprised about how our defense is going to play or where we are going to get scoring chances, we can be successful," noted Bennett. "I feel like we had some players really play well and our backline was very consistent. I am pleased with the way we played."

The Panthers will open up Horizon League play when they return to action next Friday, Sept. 26. UWM will head to Cleveland, Ohio, to take on Cleveland State University. Gametime on Friday is scheduled for 6:00 p.m.
