UWM Opens Season With Win

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Sarah Potts had 12 kills and Rachel Kuebbing added 11 as the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee volleyball team opened the 2003 season with a 41-39, 30-26, 30-21 win over William and Mary Friday night in the opening match of the Billiken Invitational.

The Panthers, picked to win the Horizon League championship, set a school record with the 41-39 score in game one. UWM then had an easier time of it in games two and three, limiting the Tribe to a .186 attack percentage in game two and a .136 attack percentage in game three.

Lindsey Spoden collected 35 assists to go with seven kills and six blocks while freshman Melissa David added seven kills.

David had 13 digs to spearhead the UWM defense while Molly McNab led the team with five blocks.

The Panthers continue tournament play Saturday, facing St. Louis and Purdue.
