Indiana Holds Off UWM 1-0 In Women's Soccer Exhibition

Aug. 22, 2003

BLOOMINGTON, IND. - The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee gave Indiana University all it could handle before eventually falling 1-0 in women's soccer exhibition action here Friday (Aug. 22). The two teams played scoreless soccer for nearly 82 minutes before the Hoosiers finally scored the game-winner. With the loss, UWM finished the exhibition season 1-1 versus outside competition.

"Overall, I'm really happy with how we played and I'm really happy with how a lot of players performed," UWM head coach Michael Moynihan said. "I thought it was a really encouraging performance."

The two teams played to a defensive standstill in the first half, as neither team could muster a shot on goal. IU managed five corner kicks to UWM's zero, but the two teams tied with three overall shots in the first 45 minutes. The game appeared to be headed for overtime before Indiana finally dented the scoreboard. The Hoosiers played a corner kick into the penalty box but UWM's Jeney Walter cleared the ball out. IU gained control however, and after a flurry, Emily Hotz punched the game-winner just past the goal line and UWM keeper Kerri St. Aubin.

"Kerri made one great save in the second half but the final goal was just a really close call," added Moynihan. "Really it was a game that could have gone either way. I think Indiana is very comparable to the tough teams we will be playing early this season."

Milwaukee will have one more tuneup before kicking off the 2003 season as the UWM Alumni will face the Panthers on Sunday (Aug. 24) at 1:00 p.m.. UWM then opens up the regular season versus Dayton at Valley Fields a week from today in the first game of the Verizon Wireless/Milwaukee Cup. The game is set to begin at 6 p.m.
