Panthers Defeat Northwestern 3-1 In Season's First Exhibition

Aug. 18, 2003

Box Score

MILWAUKEE - It was a little bit of old and a little bit of new for the University of Wisconsin men's soccer team here Monday (Aug. 18). The Panthers, playing their first exhibition match of the season, defeated Northwestern University, 3-1, thanks to two goals by a pair of veterans, and one by a newcomer.

Milwaukee scored the game's first goal when senior Julian Chang collected a high ball, turned and tucked a shot just inside the far post from 12 yards to give UWM a 1-0 lead at the 15:41 mark. Northwestern came back to tie the game when Kevin Earnest scored an unassited goal just 2:46 left in the period. The tie didn't last long, however, as freshman newcomer Dale Weiler put the Panthers ahead to stay with 2:13 remaining in the stanza. The 6-2 Weiler scored on a sliding shot thanks to a nifty individual move and pass from Bobby Lish.

The two teams played to a scoreless second period as they expiremented with three, 30-minute halves. Milwaukee put the game away late in the third period thanks to an old face. Antou Jallow, who played only 30 of the games 90 minutes, headed home a shot at the near post off of another Lish assist. Northwestern mounted a few charges in the stanza but freshman goalkeeper Eric Mickschl stopped all four shots he faced.

"We have some kinks to work out and there are areas we can improve but you can never complain with a 3-1 win," UWM head man Louis Bennett said. "It was our choice to use very few players in relation to Northwestern and it was a check of our fitness. I like the way we competed and we moved the ball very well at times."

UWM outshot the visitors 14-8 on the game with each team collecting six shots on goal. Milwaukee committed 14 fouls to 12 for Northwestern while the two teams each notched five corner kicks.

The Panthers, who are the 2003 Horizon League Preseason favorites, will enjoy three days off before returning to action. UWM will host in-state rival UW-Oshkosh Thursday (Aug. 21) at 5:30 p.m. at Engelmann Field.
