CINCINNATI -
It appears as if scoring goals in pressure-packed situations is becoming commonplace for University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee's Taylor Powell. The freshman scored her second-game winning goal of the season and third overall to help propel UWM to a 1-0 victory over Conference USA favorite University of Cincinnati here Friday (Oct. 3). Milwaukee has now won four consecutive matches after a rough start and currently sit at 4-5-1 on the season. With the loss, UC falls to 3-7-1 overall.
"Taylor has really scored in pressure situations for us," UWM head coach Michael Moynihan said. "She has shown a knack to be around the goal at the right times. We really controlled the majority of this match. To come here and play in front of a tough crowd and on a slick, turf surface says a lot about this team. This was a good win for us."
The visiting Panthers controlled play most of the match and ended up outshooting the Bearcats ten to three on the night. Milwaukee was able to possess the ball a large portion of the match thanks to strong midfield play led by Powell and senior Jeney Walter. The two teams played the first 45 minutes to a 0-0 standstill, thanks in large part to a missed penalty kick by UC's Tasha Wagner.
Milwaukee picked up the pace early in the second half and pressured the UC defense. The Panthers were able to score the game-winner after a flurry in front of the net midway through the second half. Katie Campion played a nice long pass to Maria Iaizzo, who took off towards the end line. Iaizzo then sent a pass across the goal mouth where UC keeper Sherry Slye attempted to punch the ball out. However her punch hit the crossbar and rolled in front of the net, where the opportunistic Powell jumped on it for her second goal in as many games. Powell has had a knack for scoring important goals this season as her second half tally against Butler on Sept. 21 proved to be the game-winner while her gaol in the 87th minute versus Wright State sent the game into overtime where the Panthers eventually pulled it out.
"We really handled a good, physical Cincinnati team tonight," added Moynihan. "They were picked to win their league so anytime you can go on the road and get a win like this is nice. We really played the way we wanted to play and were able to control most of the game."
Milwaukee will make a quick turnaround and return home for a Sunday (Oct. 5) Horizon League game. The Parent's Day game is set for 12 p.m. at Engelmann Field.
