GREEN BAY, Wis. -
University of Wisconsin-Green Bay midfielder Stephanie Gross took advantage of a defensive miscue and beat University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee goalkeeper Molly Schneider in overtime to propel the Phoenix to a 2-1 overtime win in Horizon League play here Friday (Oct. 17). The loss snapped UWM's 21-match Horizon League unbeaten streak and dropped the Panthers to 6-7-1 overall and 4-1-0 in league action. With the win the Phoenix improve to 6-6-1 and 3-2-0 in play.
UWM struck first when Erin Shaughnessy took a long Ginny Graczyk pass and scored on a breakaway in the 21st minute. The Panthers missed making it 2-0 at 31:49 in the first half when a Graczyk penalty kick hammered the cross bar and bounced out of bounds. UWGB battled back to tie the game in the 40th minute when Kari Olsen headed home a Angie Barratto cross to equalize the game.
Milwaukee controlled most of the second half and missed on numerous chances. Shaughnessy was the main cause of the UWM attack as she continually pressured the Green Bay defense. Phoenix Nora Kaitfors kept UWGB in the game with numerous acrobatic saves. Kaitfors stopped a one-on-one with Shaughnessy at 22:08 and stopped another Shaughnessy attempt at 8:15. Kaitfors continued her heroics at the 6:31 mark when her diving stop snuffed out a wide open attempt from Evann Franklin.
In overtime, the Phoenix scored on the second of two chances to claim the win. Moments after a UWM shot hit the post and bounced near the endline, UWGB's Kristin Smith started a counterattack and played a long ball towards the Milwaukee penalty box. The ball skipped off Panther defender Rebecca Englund and found Gross who found the net.
Coincedentally, the last Horizon League loss for UWM came in 1999 to the Phoenix in Green Bay. UWM will take the rest of the weekend off before heading to Iowa City, Iowa, to take on the University of Iowa next Friday (Oct. 24). UWM will then close Horizon League play on Sunday and can clinch its fourth consecutive league title with a win over Youngstown State.
