Sept. 7, 2002

Box Score

STORRS, Conn. - The UWM volleyball team dropped a pair of matches Saturday at the IKON Husky Classic, falling to UCONN 30-20, 30-23, 30-27 and to Temple 30-27, 30-20, 36-34.

In the first match of the day against the host Huskies, the Panthers (1-5) hit just .067 for the match, including -.118 in game one, while also committing 16 service errors. Junior Sarah Potts recorded a double-double with 17 kills and 13 digs, while Larissa Cattanach added 10 kills and four blocks. As a team, the Panthers were solid defensively, recording 11 total blocks.

Jamie Hadenfeldt and Melissa Wooley led UCONN (3-2) with 10 kills apiece, while Hadenfeldt recorded 23 digs.

In UWM's second match, the Panthers received nine kills from Potts and a stellar outing from Lindsey Spoden, who had six kills, eight blocks, 11 digs and 27 assists. But UWM hit just .115 for the match and could not overcome the Owl tandem of Liu Shu and Xu Yun, who combined for 34 kills. Yun also collected 25 digs.

"We're finding out how tough our schedule is," UWM head coach Kathy Litzau said following completing play in a tournament that included four, 20-match winners from last season. "You usually can have two hitters in double figures and win. It's been tougher than that so far. It was really a great battle down the stretch against Temple, and overall, we were better Saturday than we were on Friday. We just commit too many errors. We're just too streaky right now."

UWM returns to action next weekend, opening play in the Blue Demon Invitational Friday night at 5 p.m. against Oregon. The Panthers will face UNLV and DePaul on Saturday.
