GREEN BAY, WI -
While the St. Louis Rams may claim to be the "Greatest Show on Turf" in American football, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee men's soccer team certainly is making it's case for such a title in the collegiate soccer arena, thanks in large part to a 6-1 victory over IPFW here on Saturday (Sept. 21). With the win, the Panthers (4-1-1) have now won four straight matches and have outscored the opposition 16-3 in the process. The Mastadons of IPFW fell to 2-4 with the loss.
UWM helped solidify its reputation as one of the most high-flying, high-powered offenses around with the five goal-victory in which it outshot IPFW 28-7. The six goals scored is the most by a Milwaukee team since a 6-2 defeat of Detroit on Oct. 17, 1999, and the five-goal margin of victory is the largest by a UWM squad since a 7-2 hammering of Coastal Carolina on Sept. 27, 1997. For the season, UWM has outscored the opposition 18-6 while registering 108 total shots to the opponent's 42.
"We had a multitude of opportunities and it was one of the most exciting displays of not only creating chances but scoring on those chances," UWM head coach Louis Bennett said. "It wouldn't have been out of the question to score 15 goals today. It was just one of those days where our creativity was very, very good."
The Panthers first strike of the game came at the 20:30 mark when B.J. Blake found the net off a pass from Antou Jallow. Blake was able to volley a shot home from five yards out after a crossing pass from the right side of the field. Freshman Neil Dombrowski made it 2-0 Panthers just 13 minutes later when he tapped home a loose ball from just in front of the goal mouth. The goals were the second of the season for both Blake and Dombrowski.
IPFW cut the lead to 2-1 just two minutes into the second half when Ian Luya scored on a penalty kick at the 46:57 mark. However, the Antou Jallow show took centerstage for the next 20 minutes of the frame as the sophomore scored two more goals to push his season total to five and the UWM lead to 4-1. Jallow's first goal came off a Trent Furtsch pass while his second tally of the contest came courtesy of a Kyle Lance assist. The high-scoring Jallow now has 15 points in six games and 13 points in his last four contests.
The Panther onslaught continued late in the second half with two more goals in the 72nd and 77th minute. Kevin Roethe scored his second goal of the year at the 72:03 mark when he volleyed home a pass from eight yards out. Junior Bobby Lish, who recorded an assist on the Roethe goal, scored his first goal of the season at 77:52 when he headed home a Kyle Lance pass at 77:52.
"We were very explosive today and it was enjoyable to watch. It was very exciting stuff," Bennett added. "This was the epitome of what I hoped our squad would be in terms of interchanging people and being able to rest people while maintaining a level of quality on the field."
UWM will enjoy the rest of the weekend off before opening Horizon League play at home on Tuesday (Sept. 24). The Panthers will host Loyola University at 4 p.m. at Engelmann Field in the conference opener. Tuesday's match will also include the soccer programs check donation to the New York City Fire Department and the September 11th relief fund.
