NOTRE DAME, Ind. -
Sophomore Karen Fruit collected a career-high 19 kills in leading UWM to a 30-28, 30-21, 30-27 win over Cal Poly Saturday on the second day of the Shamrock Invitational.
Fruit also added nine digs in falling just short of her first career double-double. Junior Sarah Potts added 11 kills for the Panthers (1-1).
"Karen was just a stud," head coach Kathy Litzau said. "We were just a really poised, really controlled team tonight."
Cal Poly had received votes in the pre-season AVCA poll and beat Cincinnati in five games Friday night. But the Panthers seized control of the match early thanks to strong serving and strong back-row defense.
"We outdug them and we outserved them," Litzau said. "We were really very aggressive and attacked throughout the match."
Larissa Cattanach, returning from an injury-redshirt season last year, added nine kills while hitting .353 for the Panthers.
The Panthers wrap up play in the Shamrock Invitational Sunday afternoon against Cincinnati at 1 p.m.
