MILWAUKEE -
The UWM women's soccer team scored three times in the second half to claim a 3-0 win over the alumni team Saturday afternoon at Engelmann Field.
After a relatively even first half, the Panthers gradually took control of the match during the early portion of the second half. After three solid chances during a five-minute span, UWM finally broke through on a Maria Iaizzo goal in the 58th minute.
The alumni had their best chance to tie the match in the 77th minute on a flurry in the front of the goal following a corner kick. But, freshman goalkeeper Molly Schneider made a sprawling save to maintain the shutout.
The Panthers then added two insurance goals, one on a Maggie Suminski penalty kick in the 82nd minute and a final goal on a 30-yard finish from Sommer Rouse in the 89th minute.
Mary Duffy and Schneider each played a half in recording the shutout for UWM, which won each of its two pre-season exhibition matches.
The Panthers, ranked 10th in the Great Lakes Region by soccerbuzz.com and picked to win the Horizon League, open the regular season Friday night against Oakland University at Marquette's Valley Field.
