MILWAUKEE - In a battle of two fierce, Milwaukee rivals it is only fitting that a homegrown product played a huge part in the outcome of the game. Milwaukee-native and Pius XI graduate Elizabeth Chudy delivered the equalizing goal for the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in a 1-1 double overtime tie versus Marquette University here Sunday (Oct. 27) night. With the draw, UWM continues to lead the all-time series between the crosstown rivals 4-3-3. Milwaukee is now 7-5-5 on the season while the Golden Eagles sit at 10-5-3.

"For the most part, I was pleased with our effort and our intensity," UWM head coach Michael Moynihan said. "We tried to focus on shoring up the defensive midfield because we were getting hurt there some. I think once we got better at that and were able to control the ball we gained some confidence."

The homestanding Eagles controlled much of the play in the first half, outshooting UWM 4-0 in the first 45 minutes. While the Milwaukee offense struggled to create chances, the Panther defense held strong for the majority of the half. However, Marquette was able to dent the scoreboard and grab a 1-0 lead at the 25:48 mark when Kate Gordon headed home a Kristin Halley crossing pass.

Marquette continued to press in the first part of the second half and tried to take advantage of UWM's depleted midfield. The Panthers, who were already without starter Janice McGann due to injury, lost senior stalwart Katie Kubacki to an injured right ankle early in the second half. After some lineup adjusting and encouragement by UWM head coach Michael Moynihan the Panthers began to press offensively and change the tempo of the game.

With the explosive offensive tandem of Elizabeth Chudy and Amber Jelinek working together, Milwaukee took three shots in the second half, two of which went on goal. Then, in the 80th minute, the freshman Chudy changed the entire complexion of the game with one blast of her right foot. The 5-8 forward took control of the ball in the midfield, dribbled a few strides and rifled a shot off the crossbar and into the net from 25 yards out to even the score.

The two teams then exchanged counterattacks the remainder of the second half and into both overtimes only to see both defenses hold. UWM second-half and overtime goalkeeper Molly Schneider played well in net to preserve the tie, making six saves while thwarting numerous other Golden Eagle advances.

"I thought Molly really played well tonight," Moynihan noted. "She handled the crosses well, she took charge, and she kept the ball out of the net. She played controlled and she was assertive and she even got our counterattack going nicely with some long goal kicks."

The Panthers, who sit at 4-0-1 in Horizon League play, will wrap up the 2002 regular season next week with a pair of matches. UWM can clinch its third straight regular season league title with a win or a tie versus UW-Green Bay on Wednesday (Oct. 30). The game is set to begin at 2:30 pm at Engelmann Field. Milwaukee will then finish the season under the lights versus Valpariso University on Friday (Nov. 1) night at Uihlein Soccer Park. Gametime is set for 6 p.m.
