MILWAUKEE-Freshman Antou Jallow scored two goals to help UWM roll past Saint Mary's, 3-0, Saturday afternoon in the 28th annual Coca-Cola Panther Invitational at Engelmann Field.
Jallow scored his first goal in the 17th minute when he finished a pass from freshman Chris Brisson that slid past the goalmouth in traffic. A midfielder from Uppsala, Sweden, Jallow notched his second goal of the game in the 22nd minute when he headed a cross into the Gaels' net past goalkeeper Dan McElhinney. Sophomore Kyle Lance assisted on the play, crossing it in after his initial corner kick was blocked to help give the Panthers the lead into halftime.
"Once we had the 2-0 lead, we weren't necessarily coasting but I would say we had a much smoother ride," UWM coach Louis Bennett said. "We were definitely looking for a challenge coming into this game, and it did show some adversity. The first 15 minutes of both halves were a little helter-skelter as it took a bit for us to adjust. But it's good experience for us to see how to react. They had some good chances, but we answered quickly with chances of our own."
UWM's attack looked more dangerous in the second half, as the Panthers had a handful of 1v1 opportunities on goal. Freshman defender Khaled El-Ahmad connected on one of those in the middle of the second half, but his goal was called back. Also from Uppsala, Sweden, El-Ahmad made a great run out of the back on a UWM counter attack and volleyed home a cross from Tighe Dombrowski before being ruled offside.
Senior Ryan Seymour finally put one away for the knocking Panthers in the 86th minute to give UWM the 3-0 victory. Junior goalkeeper Chris Dadaian assisted on the goal, punting it to lead Seymour with a 1v1 against the goalkeeper. Seymour flicked the bouncing ball over substitute goalkeeper Kellan Wilson to record his fourth goal of the season.
"They played direct for the last 15 minutes, needing a goal to sneak back in," Bennett said. "Last year we had problems with defending that, but now we managed to handle it. The final goal we scored, off a direct play of our own, pretty much killed them off at the end. In all fairness, that goal was long overdue."
UWM out shot Saint Mary's, 28-10, and were led by Seymour's seven shots, including four on goal. Dadaian tallied three saves and recorded his second straight shutout to go 2-0 on the season.
In other tournament action, Eastern Illinois defeated UW-Green Bay in overtime, 3-2. EIU's game-winning goal came unassisted in the 100th minute from forward Jason Thompson. Eastern forward Derrick Perry scored first in the game at the 9:21 mark off an assist from Thompson. Green Bay was then credited a goal to equalize off an EIU own-goal in the 31st minute. Green Bay's Brian Giovinazzi scored midway in the second half to take the 2-1 lead, but Eastern countered in the 80th minute with a goal from midfielder Aaron Aguirre to send the game into overtime.
Sunday in the Panther Invitational, UWM takes on Eastern Illinois at 2 p.m. following the Green Bay-Saint Mary's game at noon.
